
And now we meet a pillar of Dakenggu community in Yilan’s Su’ao Township. Out of a love for his hometown, Huang Yi-shu works as a Hokkien teacher, helping kids discover the language. And, wanting to preserve the natural beauty he remembers from his own childhood, Huang conducts ecological surveys, helping track the health of crabs in the local river.
With a textbook in hand, Huang stands by the blackboard and teaches the eight basic tones of Taiwanese Hokkien.
Huang Yi-shu, better known as Brother A-shu, got into teaching Hokkien because of his teacher Chung Mao-shu. When Chung passed away, Huang took up his mantle, writing a new course for learning Hokkien, and undergoing official teacher training.
But language is just one string to his bow. Two years ago, he wanted to connect to his roots, and threw himself into conducting surveys of crabs in the local area.

I was born in this village. I wanted to come back and find some of my memories from childhood.
A community development association was founded here in Huang’s hometown, Dakenggu in Su’ao, two years ago. From the 16th to the 19th of each lunar month, come rain or shine, volunteers head out to survey the crabs at high tide.

Theoretically crabs should inhabit windbreaks. But we don’t have a lot of windbreaks in our survey area. So for that reason we were discussing what has gone wrong with the windbreaks. And then we discovered that the windbreaks are quite fragmented – they’re not very healthy.

It will be an extremely positive support for not just the community, but also the ecosystem, if this project can be continued.
Huang divides his time between passing down Taiwan’s cultural heritage, and helping to monitor and protect the natural world on his doorstep.
宜蘭一位人稱阿樹哥的黃逸樹,多年前在前輩鍾茂樹帶領下,加入推廣台語的行列。他還自編教材,同時考取證照,變成正式台語老師。除了教台語,阿樹哥每個月還會跟夥伴到家鄉大坑罟內的防風林調查螃蟹,希望能保護兒時的自然環境。
拿著課本,站在講台上講課,這次要上的,是台語最基本的八個音調。
負責授課的老師是他,人稱阿樹哥的黃逸樹,之所以一腳踏進台語教學領域,全是前輩鍾茂樹的帶領。鍾老師過世後,他承接使命,自編教材教學,還考取資格認證成為正式台語教師。
除了教台語,黃逸樹兩年前為了找回兒時記憶,投入螃蟹調查活動。

兩年前他在家鄉宜蘭蘇澳大坑罟,成立社區發展協會,每個月農曆16至19號漲潮時,他和志工就會出動調查螃蟹,風雨無阻。

“蟹調他理當應該是居住在防風林裡面,但是我們的調查,防風林數量並不是很多,從這個原因去探討說防風林出了什麼問題,後來發現防風林比較屬於破碎化,它不是一個很健康的防風林”

黃逸樹一邊教台語,一邊斜槓調查螃蟹,用自己的力量,為自己愛的語言及土地盡一份力。
