Joint battalion to train in the US in latter half of 2022: report

Reports have emerged that two Taiwanese brigades will be heading to the U.S. in the latter half of the year for military training. Previously, exchanges like these would be kept on the down-low, and only smaller military units would be dispatched. A retired Air Force officer says the change in approach signifies that military exchanges between Taiwan and the U.S. are no longer something to be kept secret out of fear of political interference. The scope of the military training has been upgraded. They are all tactical units, focusing on battle. That applies to both the 333rd Brigade and the 542nd Brigade. The 542nd Brigade is the Armored Brigade. We’re going to be getting M1A2T tanks soon, so perhaps the brigade could get training on that front in the U.S. It’s a possibility. It was more low-key before, or even classified. Such matters would not be made public to prevent any political interference or obstacles that could terminate the process. But now it’s all public. It’s all over the table.
The 542nd Armored Brigade is stationed in Hsinchu, while the 333rd Mechanized Infantry Brigade is stationed in Pingtung. In 2019, the two were assembled into a joint battalion that can operate independently or in direct collaboration with sea, land, and air forces.

台美軍事互動過往較為低調，國軍派出排級或連級單位赴美受訓，屬於小規模，但現在傳出已改為聯兵旅的陸軍542旅與333旅，將於下半年派員前往美國，這將是軍方首度有營級單位赴美，退將分析這兩個單位都是作戰單位，對於實戰化有很大幫助，也代表台美軍事互動已經公開化。

“軍事的這種訓練層次拉升了，拉高了，這些都是作戰單位，是以作戰(為主)的，不管333旅也好，542旅也好，542旅它是裝甲(旅) ，裝甲的話現在我們要接裝M1A2T重坦克，現在是不是到美國接受訓練，有這種可能，以前是低調甚至保密，不對外張揚，以免這些消息走露，遭到政治上的干擾跟阻撓而沒辦法成行，那現在變成公開化，檯面化”
駐守在新竹湖口的542旅，及駐守屏東萬巒的333旅，兩個單位原本為裝步與機步單位，但2019年改為聯兵旅，讓所屬營級單位皆有獨立作戰能力，也可直接與海、空、陸航特等部隊，建立聯繫管道，請求支援作戰。
