South faces tighter water rationing as drought worsens

2023-03-22

Southern Taiwan is facing stricter water rationing amid a worsening drought. The government has placed Kaohsiung on an orange alert, up from yellow. This means that starting next Thursday, water users that exceed 1,000 cubic meters a month will need to achieve a 10% reduction, or risk a supply cut.

This restriction is already in place in the neighboring city of Tainan. Farther up north, the drought is less severe, although the government is preparing for it to worsen. It’s placed Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, and northern Changhua on a green alert, which means that water storage levels are below normal. In these areas, water pressure will be reduced during off-peak nighttime hours. In industrial centers, users must cut their water consumption by 5%.

另外,旱災中央災害應變中心也決議,即日起包括新竹、苗栗、台中和北彰化地區,水情燈號轉為「水情提醒」的綠燈,但夜間離峰時段,也要實施減壓供水,園區廠商則要節水5%。
