Taiwan raises US$40.89 million in earthquake relief for Turkey

Taiwan has announced another round of donations to help Turkey recover from last month’s devastating earthquake. On Wednesday, the foreign ministry said that US$1.17 million will go to the Turkish capital, to provide hot meals for earthquake survivors. An additional US$19 million will go to humanitarian organizations to assist the vulnerable. Altogether, Taiwan has raised more than US$40 million for Turkey, in combined government and public donations.

These moves, including donations from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan, dispatch of the search and rescue team, provision of 415 tons of relief supplies and other forms of aid.

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake on Feb. 6 killed more than 50,000 people in Turkey and Syria. Taiwan was among the first countries to send search and rescue teams to help. Altogether the Taiwan government and the general public raised US$40.89 million in relief funds, of which US$20 million were distributed on Feb. 18. As for the remaining amount, US$1.17 million raised by the government will be donated to the Turkish capital of Ankara to purchase food trucks, to offer survivors a warm meal. Of the remaining funds raised by the general public, US$5 million will go to the Turkish Red Crescent Society, US$5 million to a national alliance for people with disabilities, and US$9 million to the Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants.

The foreign ministry’s relief fund is still accepting donations, and officials say more announcements will be made on how the money is distributed.

上個月初，土敘發生規模7.8強震，超過5萬人不幸罹難，台灣除了第一時間派搜救隊到當地支援，民間捐款金額更是可觀，截至3/6，賑災專戶共收到11.8億台幣，加上200萬政府援款，總計達4089萬美元，外交部今天召開記者會，說明款項分配運用。

2月6號土敘發生7.8強震，奪走超過5萬條人命，台灣不但在第一時間派搜救隊前往當地，國人更發揮愛心，截至3/6，民間加上政府捐款，達4千089萬美元，2/18已經先捐2千萬美元，剩餘善款，政府方面，捐給首都安卡拉市府117萬美元，採購行動餐廚車，讓災民有熱食可享用，非政府組織部分，分別捐給「紅新月會」500萬美元，「身障聯合總會」500萬美元，再捐給「庇護者移民協會」900萬美元。
