Chiayi coffee producers share professional exchange with Okinawan peers

2023-09-24

Coffee producers from Chiayi have held a professional exchange with their peers in the Japanese prefecture of Okinawa. The Alishan region of Chiayi has become a major coffee region in recent years. Now coffee farmers from Okinawa want to benefit from the expertise of Alishan’s growers. Because Okinawa and Taiwan share many similarities of climate and terroir, they have lots to talk about.

Here on the edge of Okinawa’s Nago City sits a coffee farm. Its owner started it seven years ago when he moved back to his home from Tokyo. The growth of these young green coffee beans must be carefully protected from marauding typhoons, as well as harsh sunshine and torrential rains. It’s a headache to keep all those issues in mind, which is why he decided to seek advice from Taiwanese coffee farmers working 1,000 kilometers away.

Taiwanese coffee has won lots of international acclaim in recent years. Coffee is now an important agricultural product for Taiwan. Formosan beans were already being imported by an Okinawan coffee house many years ago.

It’s got such a rich aroma, with a truly clear taste, with no impurities in the flavor. It’s so fresh and clean and has a long aftertaste.

The Alishan mountainous region in Chiayi used to be famous for producing oolong tea. Now it’s transforming into one of Taiwan’s most important coffee regions.

When you harvest coffee beans and dry them and ferment them – the process is remarkably similar to how you make oolong tea. Taiwanese people are very familiar with these tea manufacturing techniques and can apply them to producing coffee.

Taiwanese coffee producers made a previous visit to Okinawa for an industry exchange with local peers. They were happy to share all their knowledge and skills in response to all kinds of coffee-growing questions.

This generous exchange between Taiwan and Japan aims to contribute to an upgrade in coffee production techniques in Okinawa. Both sides hope they can deepen their ties in the future, and maybe sparks will fly.
