Taiwan’s allies speaking at the UN General Debate in NYC call for Taiwan’s inclusion

2023-09-24

At the U.N. General Debate in New York City over the weekend, Taiwan’s allies spoke up on Taiwan’s behalf. They said that the U.N. and its agencies should be inclusive of all people worldwide, and that Taiwan should be allowed to participate in a meaningful way in the world body. Some allies also spoke out against Chinese military aggression, saying that a conflict in the Taiwan Strait would affect the whole world, and that Taiwan must be allowed continued self-determination.

Saturday was the fifth day of the General Debate at the U.N.’s 78th Session. During the debate, Taiwan’s allies expressed support for its inclusion in the U.N., calling Taiwan an indispensable member of the international community.

Kausea Natano
Prime Minister, Tuvalu
We call for the participation of everyone worldwide, including the people of Taiwan. We must make the necessary arrangements for Taiwan to meaningfully participate in U.N. specialized agencies and mechanisms.

Philip J. Pierre
Prime Minister, Saint Lucia
The people of the Republic of China on Taiwan should be allowed the continued enjoyment of their right to self-determination, and the exercise of their democratic freedoms, without threats to their autonomy and to their place in international fora.

While some called for Taiwan’s inclusion, others appealed for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, saying that a military conflict would have serious consequences.

Ralph Gonsalves
Prime Minister, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Peace across the Taiwan Strait is an imperative for the prosperity and security of the world.

Terrance Drew
Prime Minister, Saint Kitts and Nevis
We urge for peace in that region of the world, as war would result in severe consequences for all of us.

By the fifth day of the U.N.’s General Debate on Saturday, 11 allies had expressed support for Taiwan – the same number that had done so at the last U.N. session. Most notably, Marshall Islands’ President David Kabua criticized the U.N. for having misinterpreted Resolution 2758, which led to the exclusion of Taiwan. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s ally Haiti, which had been embroiled in political upheaval, has not spoken up for Taiwan. Some observers suggest that that may be a sign that Haiti is preparing for a diplomatic switch to Beijing.

2023-09-24
