Boxers Kan Chia-wei, Lai Chun-en clinch silver at Asian Games

Over in men’s boxing, Taiwan has ended a 53-year medal drought at the Asian Games. Taiwan’s Lai Chu-en fought a gold-medal match against his Mongolian opponent Wednesday night. Despite losing all three rounds, he bagged a silver for Taiwan in the men’s 57-63.5 kilogram category. The day before, his compatriot Kan Chia-wei clinched another silver in the men’s 63.5-71 kilogram event. Both boxers have now secured their spots in the Paris Olympics.

Taiwanese boxer Lai Chu-en, wearing red, is ready for battle against Mongolia in the men’s 57-63.5 kilogram final. After competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics, the 27-year-old hit a low point in his boxing career. But now he’s back in the game, ready to fight for gold at the Asian Games.

Lai was up against a formidable opponent, 32-year-old Baatarsukhiin Chinzorig, who won silver at the previous Asian Games and at this year’s IBA World Boxing Championships. A day earlier on Wednesday, Taiwan’s Kan Chia-wei settled for silver in the men’s 63.5-71 kilogram event, when officials ruled that he could not compete due to an eye injury. That put all the pressure on Lai to win a boxing gold for Taiwan.

After winning the first two rounds, the Mongolian put up a solid defense in the third. Lai was left struggling to recover. He was defeated 0-5, securing silver for Taiwan.

I think Taiwan is breaking through in boxing, and I hope we can keep that up in the future. It really is tougher to be a boxer in Taiwan.

It had been 53 years since Taiwan last won a medal in men’s boxing at the Asian Games. Lai and Kan have ended the drought with their silvers, while earning their tickets to the Paris Olympics.

亞運賴主恩摘銀台灣男子拳擊奪2銀戰果輝煌

台灣在本屆亞運的拳擊項目表現精彩，尤其是男子選手，賴主恩昨晚在63.5公斤的金牌戰，雖然以0比5輸給蒙古選手，但還是獲得一面銀牌，加上71公斤級的甘家葳一共兩面銀牌的進帳，中止了台灣男子拳擊在亞運長達53年的獎牌荒，加上兩人也因此拿到明年巴黎奧運的參賽門票，可說是戰果輝煌。

賴主恩在男子63.5公斤的金牌戰，對上蒙古拳手，巴塔爾蘇赫，27歲的賴主恩，參加過里約奧運之後，陷入低潮，而且一度還自暴自棄，幸好及時找回自我，重新回到了正軌，如今站上了亞運的金牌戰擂台。

蒙古拳手巴塔爾蘇赫，32歲，他是上屆亞運銀牌，以及今年世錦賽銀牌，相當有實力。由於台灣另一位猛將甘家葳，因為左眼角受傷，過磅時裁判認為不適合出賽，直接獲得銀牌，因此，台灣拳擊金牌的重擔，都落在了賴主恩的肩上。

前兩回合都勝出的巴塔爾蘇赫，最後第三回合緊守門戶，讓賴主恩無力回天，最終就以0比5落敗，再獲得一面銀牌。

“我覺得台灣拳擊現在就是一個很大的突破，希望這種突破可以延續下去，說真的台灣拳擊環境真的比較辛苦。”

台灣男子拳擊在亞運會上，已經53年沒拿過獎牌，賴主恩以及甘家葳，這次聯手終結獎牌荒，同時也都取得巴黎奧運的參賽資格。
