Nineteen-year-old Liu Chiao-hsi has claimed gold in roller skating at the Asian Games. The teen won Thursday in the speed slalom event of the women’s inline freestyle skating competition. In a post-race interview, she said it felt surreal to win, after devoting two years of her life to training.

My performance slipped a bit earlier, during the preliminaries, but I quickly adjusted my mindset once the competition was over. I felt more confident in the finals, so I was able to reach my goal. I have been working toward this moment for two years. So once I actually got the gold, it felt surreal, because just like that, after two years, it’s over with this one competition.

Liu beat out a rival from Iran to win the speed slalom final. Looking back on her training, she said it was full of ups and downs, including an injury to her Achilles tendon. There was a point where she lost sight of her goal, but she powered through, and all that hard work eventually paid off.
