Unusual marketing stunt makes good use of baffled banners

Unusual marketing stunt makes good use of baffled banners

2024-01-16

The historic district of Anping in Tainan is a major tourist destination. But recently, punters have been attracted by a new sight in the area. A group of businesses have set up huge red banners with endearingly baffled messages. “I don’t know why we put these up,” reads one of the droll banners. The unusual marketing stunt has been a big hit for the small businesses, as locals and tourists flock to see the banners in person.

A road in Tainan’s Anping District. Not one, not two, not three, but four restaurants all have eye-catching red banners up. This is a hotpot restaurant, but the banner has nothing to do with hotpot. It says, “The whole street has banners, we’d stand out if we didn’t too.” The next says, “I don’t know why we have the banners, either.”

Mr. Cheng
We thought, if we just put up one banner, it wouldn’t create the right atmosphere. So we asked the neighbors to hang banners up with us, and that way, we created an attraction.

This drinks store owner wanted to create some buzz, so he got the neighbors into the plan, and they all put up these humorous banners. One 5-meter banner costs about NT$1,000 to make. So each banner is worth NT$800-1,000 – a very cheap way to create a scene. Lots of visitors have come here to enjoy the joke and take a photo, and it’s been great for business.

Hotpot restaurant owner
Customers ask about it. It seems to have worked well.

Member of public
I was attracted to come because of it. It’s quite creative.

The initiator of the project says the banners have got the response he hoped for. The group is still mulling over what the next joke might be, but for now, this street of red banners and mock confusion is the hottest place to be in Anping.
