AIT chair says Nauru’s switch to Beijing is ‘disappointing’

The American Institute in Taiwan has criticized Nauru for its decision to cut ties with Taiwan. At a Tuesday press conference in Taiwan, AIT Chair Laura Rosenberger said that Nauru’s decision was, quote, disappointing. She also took issue with Nauru’s reason for ending the relationship. In a statement, the Pacific nation had cited United Nations Resolution 2758, which recognized the PRC as the only legitimate representative of China.

U.N. Resolution 2758 did not make a determination on the status of Taiwan. It does not preclude countries from having diplomatic relationships with Taiwan, and does not preclude Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the U.N. system. It is disappointing to see distorted narratives about U.N. Resolution 2758 being used as a tool to pressure Taiwan, limit its voice on the international stage, and influence its diplomatic relations. … Taiwan is a reliable, likeminded, and democratic partner. We encourage all countries to expand engagement with Taiwan. While the government of Nauru’s action is a sovereign decision, it is nonetheless a disappointing one. The PRC often makes promises in exchange for diplomatic relations that ultimately remain unfulfilled.
Rosenberger said the U.S. remains committed to a peaceful resolution to cross-strait differences, and that it opposes unilateral changes to the status quo. She reiterated that Washington was committed to supporting Taiwan’s self-defense.

台灣大選後，美國總統拜登派遣的高階代表團早上離開台灣，AIT主席羅森伯格親自召開記者會，對於諾魯突襲式與台灣斷交表示失望，對於諾魯以聯合國2758號決議為由與台斷交，羅森柏格也說，不符合國際期待。

“聯合國2758號決議文，並沒有決定台灣的地位，沒有排除任何國家與台灣建立外交關係，也沒有排除台灣有意義參與聯合國體系，因此我們感到非常令人失望的是，有人引用2758決議作為與台灣斷交的理由，這並不符合國際的期待。台灣是一個值得信賴，理念相近的民主夥伴，我們支持世界上所有國家與台灣進行往來，雖然諾魯的決定是國家自己做的，但當然對我們來說是令人感到失望，中國常常在爭取外交建交時，會做出一些承諾，但最後常常沒有落實”
針對兩岸關係，羅森伯格重申美國立場，希望在不受脅迫情況下，以和平方式解決兩岸分歧，反對片面改變現狀。國防上也重申支持台灣維持自我防衛能力的承諾。
