
Taiwan could soon see a doctor shortage in certain specialties. That’s according to a survey by the Taiwan Medical Association, which found that the average age of Taiwan’s doctors is 51.5. The specialty with the youngest doctors is emergency care, with doctors averaging 44.6 years old. The specialty with the oldest doctors is obstetrics and gynecology, with doctors averaging 56.7.

Young people want a good quality of life. They don’t want to be on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There’s no way they’d want to do that.

There should be more measures to encourage doctors to enter more difficult specialties, so that young people can see a future in them.
Taiwan’s Medical Accident Prevention and Dispute Resolution Act took effect this year on Jan. 1, after a 10-year legislative process. The law requires the creation of a third-party legal entity to investigate medical accidents. Many hope measures like this will ease the burden of malpractice lawsuits, encouraging more doctors to enter specialties where lawsuits are most prevalent.

醫改會期待,新上路的「醫療事故預防及爭議處理法」,讓新血醫師投入醫療糾紛是非多的科別,減緩醫師人力缺口對民眾健康衝擊。
