Hualien earthquake had energy equivalent to 32 atomic bombs: expert

The 7.2 magnitude earthquake was the strongest to hit Taiwan in 25 years. One expert has compared its energy to that of 32 atomic bombs. Striking at a shallow depth of 15 kilometers, the quake was felt islandwide. Let’s hear from the experts.

This was the strongest earthquake to occur since the 1999 Jiji earthquake 25 years ago. Because it struck at a depth of 15.5 kilometers, its shaking was felt across Taiwan, including in the central and northern regions. Aftershocks ranging from magnitude 6.5 to 7 are possible within the next three days, because this single 7.2 magnitude earthquake has not fully released all the seismic energy. This energy will be released slowly, over time.

This earthquake occurred at the boundary of tectonic plates, along a fault system. These little black dots represent past earthquakes in the areas. This time, the earthquake struck here, so it’s linked to the Longitudinal Valley Fault.
The earthquake sparked a tsunami warning for coastal areas. Fortunately, the largest wave of the day, observed at Yilan’s Wushi Port, measured just 82 centimeters in height. As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, there have been over 100 aftershocks, including two that were above magnitude 6.

這起地震是921地震後25年來，台灣發生規模最大的地震。專家分析，相當於32顆原子彈的威力。由於深度只有15公里，全台有感，最強震度出現在花蓮，達到6強。

“921地震發生25年以後的一個最大規模的一個地震，那這個地震它的深度因為15.5公里，所以相對在全台灣各地，包含從中部到北部，都有感覺到相當的震動。三天以內(規模)6.5到7的地震，還是有可能發生，因為這地區的能量不會透過一個7.2的地震，就把這個能量做一個完整的釋放，所以它會慢慢，慢慢釋放”

“它是屬於在我們板塊的一個邊界碰撞帶的一個斷層系統，很多小黑點，這都是過去在這邊發生的地震，那這個是，這次地震發生在這邊，所以它是跟這個，花東縱谷斷層系統是有關係的”
截至下午五點，累計共發生了一百多起餘震，上午甚至還有兩起規模6以上餘震。除了餘震不斷，氣象署也一度針對沿海地區，發布海嘯警報，提醒沿海民眾注意，所幸最大的一個海嘯波出現在烏石港，觀測到的潮位只有82公分。
