Wistron inks 60-year lease to build ‘AI corridor’ in Neihu

Electronics maker Wistron Corporation has inked a land lease in Taipei’s Neihu District. With 60 years of rights over 6,000 square meters of land, the company will build a new headquarters to attract tech talent. It also plans to develop the area into a so-called "AI corridor."

At a signing ceremony, Wistron and the Taipei City government seal the deal on a lease for Wistron’s new Neihu headquarters.

In the future, Wistron and its subsidiary Wiwynn will generate 3,500 jobs, along with tremendous economic value estimated at NT$800 billion.

Wistron has taken out a 60-year lease in Neihu’s Tanmei area, for 6,407.79 square meters of land. It plans to build an “AI corridor” in Neihu, despite concerns over the power supply.

Whether there’s enough electricity has always been a huge concern. Laboratories consume a great deal of electricity. Actually, we have done extensive studies on the power supply. We were just discussing this issue with the city government. We will take part of our operations – the most power-hungry portion – to the Southern Taiwan Science Park.

We should be just fine. We filed our application with the city government very early on. We began preparing for the power supply issue very early on. We started our AI planning very early on. Very early on, we recognized that this was something important.

The AI wave is underway, and Wistron has positioned itself for the ride. A supplier to Nvidia, the company has already expanded to Mexico and Malaysia. It hopes to attract fresh tech talent with its new Neihu headquarters.

緯創提早布局AI產業，搭上人工智慧熱潮，又是輝達供應鏈，在墨西哥及馬來西亞陸續設廠運營，這回在內湖設立總部，希望未來能夠延攬更多台灣科技人才。

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is set to fly out on Saturday, after a two-week visit that ignited AI mania in Taiwan. As his adoring fans waited outside, Huang hosted a banquet at a Michelin-starred restaurant to thank his Taiwanese employees. One day before his departure, he charmed the crowds with another quotable remark about Taiwan’s tech scene. He noted the word "Taiwan" contains the letters "AI," symbolizing that Taiwan will help the world build AI infrastructure.

The crowds were densely packed, wrapping around a small restaurant. They were all waiting for one man: Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

As soon as Huang appeared in the entrance, the crowd went wild, as if they were seeing a celebrity. They thronged around him, as camera lights flashed nonstop. In their hands were newspapers, baseballs, and mobile phone cases for Huang to sign, and they completely encircled him.

With fans going wild, Huang stood next to his car door and waved. He gave a shout-out to the media that’s trailed him everywhere from dawn to dusk.

No matter where Huang goes in Taiwan, the spotlight always follows. Although his Taiwan jaunt lasted just two weeks, Huang set off a national AI craze. A day before his departure, he dropped one last witticism about AI.

Global experts converge at International Conference on Sea Lane Security

Scholars from around the world are in Taiwan for the 2024 International Conference on Sea Lane Security, hosted by the Ocean Affairs Council. The event aims to promote stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, boost Taiwan’s international standing, and foster maritime security through collaboration projects. According to an American scholar, Taiwan should seek to strengthen its collaboration with democratic partners, and develop satellite technology for use in maritime surveillance.

Ocean affairs officials and experts from around the world attended the 2024 International Conference on Sea Lane Security, hosted by the Ocean Affairs Council. Ocean affairs minister Kuan Bi-ling gave a prerecorded speech at the opening ceremony.

Peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are indispensable for global security and prosperity. The mission of the International Conference on Sea Lane Security is to facilitate active collaboration among partners in the Indo-Pacific and deal with China’s military expansion and gray-zone tactics.

The conference is aimed at highlighting “maritime security issues” that exist between Taiwan and likeminded countries, fostering substantive cooperation. In recent years, China has posed an enormous threat to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and the Taiwan Strait. Gregory Poling, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, emphasized the importance of Taiwan’s geostrategic position.

It’s an important topic at a very important time. The PRC, not just in the Taiwan Strait, and around Taiwan, but across the Indo-Pacific, in the South China Sea and East China Sea, bringing together an international group of maritime security experts and lawyers to share lessons learned and figure out how best to respond to this threat to really the international law. It’s really important.

Poling said that in the face of China’s gray zone warfare, Taiwan should make full use of high technology, such as satellites, to promptly detect the suspicious movements of sea vessels.

We share that information internally within the Taiwanese government and share it externally with partners. Setting off more cooperative mechanisms among likeminded states is really going to be the key.

Experts recommended that Taiwan strengthen the development of its space technology, integrating resources to enhance national maritime security awareness. This will enable Taiwan to cooperate with likeminded countries to defend freedom, democracy, and security in international navigation in the face of the threat from China.

Afraid of the water? No worries! Local diving instructors say they can cure any form of aquaphobia. Follow our reporter as we get a peek into an island adventure.

From a high altitude, you can appreciate the beautiful coastline of Palau. The famous Peleliu Wall is one of the best diving sites in the world. The underwater world is what draws visitors to Palau, as 90% of the island nation’s attractions are related to the sea. What about people who are afraid of water? Can they enjoy a vacation on the island?

You have to wear a life jacket, and then just follow your guide. The tour guides here are good in the water, and they will guide you step by step, starting from the basics. Your guide is like a therapist, who will lead you slowly and help you relax in the ocean.

Rock Islands is a great place to take the perfect shot for Instagram, with the backdrop of a limestone uprise. Or, you could paddle your way into a cave, or visit a plane wreck of a Japanese Zero from World War II. If you’re still not impressed, you can land on an uninhabited island and walk through a tropical rainforest.

During the pandemic a friend went paddleboarding by himself and discovered this place. Many Palauans may not even have been here. You have to use a kayak or paddleboard to get here.

Moss-covered stones can be seen everywhere on the uninhabited island. These are calcite. In the Stone Age, the Yapese people used these stones to make currency. If you go up the trail, you will find traces of life in some caves.

It is an unspoiled environment. It’s not like in Taiwan, where if you go paddleboarding or kayaking, it is more commercial and artificial. Here in Palau, the whole place is quite primitive, and it’s very beautiful.

Technology helps bridge Pacific Island education gaps

High school students who identify as Pacific Islanders have one of the highest dropout rates in the United States, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Voice of America’s Jessica Stone introduces us to an immigrant teacher in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands who is aiming to change that.

Thirty-year-old Riya Nathrani has yearned to teach since she was a young girl, newly arrived from India to CNMI, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory in the Pacific.

I would line up my dolls every day after school and pretend that I was teaching a class of students.”

These days, her classroom is full of other teachers trying to learn how to overcome the barriers of educating students in the Marianas – where 38% of the population lives in poverty – and tropical storms can cancel school for months at a time, even postponing the 2023 graduation ceremony at Marianas High School.

They’re not really thinking about education at that time. And then when we finally do get back to school, we have this huge educational gap with where we left off a few months ago and where they’re expected to be by the end of the year.

Nathrani believes technology can help close that gap. Even before the pandemic standardized online learning for grade schools nationwide, she traveled the Marianas, training teachers to develop compelling online courses, implementing distance education to supplement staff shortages on the remote islands, and teaching students to build spreadsheets, create graphics and write resumes.

If Dr. Nathrani never became a teacher, she never taught, I don’t know how I would, or how me and my peers would adapt to the ongoing society that we have and the development of technology.

Mozunder will enter college in the fall and is considering a career in education. For Nathrani, that choice is the definition of her own success.

Just because we’re from a small island, it doesn’t mean that their opportunities are limited. It’s all about working hard and it’s about being able to see yourself achieving that dream.

MOCA Taipei holds art exhibition about #MeToo movement

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei is holding an exhibition that has invited 14 groups of artists with works that center on the #MeToo movement. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in to see the highlights.

This exhibition is split into three themes: "Exploring," "Responding," and "Restoring.” The theme "Exploring" guides viewers on a journey to explore their bodies and feelings in addition to identifying oppression due to power asymmetries.

There’s an artist who created a video. The scenes of the video are in Mexico, and they show the horrific violence that women in Mexico suffer from. The theme of exploration guides the audience to explore oppression in daily life that’s a result of inequality. Through this theme, you can feel something physical or emotional.

The "Responding" theme space allows visitors to interact with the installations and immerse themselves in the works.

The "Restoring" section features a series of artworks that invite viewers to find ways to heal. In addition to artworks on display, the museum has also planned a series of lectures and movie screenings.

The theme of “Responding” showcases works where artists have transformed the space of the Museum of Contemporary Art into a place for alternative experiences, which allows the visitors to experience these issues in a safe place. For the “Restoring” theme, we are holding both workshops and film screenings to help everyone to self-heal after they’ve visited the exhibition.

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei invited 14 groups of artists who have artworks that are connected to the #MeToo movement. The exhibition invites viewers to explore their bodies and emotions, identify and respond to power asymmetries, and re-discover the connection between themselves and society.
