Cancer is still the leading cause of death in Taiwan, the health ministry’s latest figures show. According to data for 2023, cancer ranked first for the 42nd year straight, accounting for 26% of just over 200,000 deaths. The list of deadliest cancers didn’t change from the year before, with lung cancer at No. 1.

Health ministry department of statistics director
Cancer has been the No. 1 cause of death for 42 years in a row. The ranking of Top 10 cancers hasn’t changed from the previous year. Lung cancer and liver cancer still hold the first two spots.
Hung Tzu-jen
Shin Kong Hospital vice superintendent
As far as lung cancer is concerned, last year we saw its incidence rate surpass colon cancer and rectal cancer for the first time. Lung cancer is typically detected in its latest stages. Its five-year survival rate is less than 15%.
As for the other causes of death, Nos. 2 and 3 were heart disease and pneumonia. COVID-19 fatalities dropped from third to sixth place. The Taiwan CDC expects the COVID death rate to be even lower in 2024, possibly falling out of the Top 10 altogether.
