Taekwondo star Lo Chia-ling in training for the Paris Olympics

Taiwan’s taekwondo star Lo Chia-ling is hard at work preparing for the Paris Olympics. She gained the nickname “The Nation’s Girlfriend” after winning a silver medal in Tokyo in 2022. This time she says she hopes to repeat her success. But this year, she’s recovering from an ankle injury, which is a big extra burden. And there’s an unexpected spanner in the works: she’s still getting taller. That makes it harder and harder for her to stay within the weight restriction of her featherweight class.

Lo Chia-ling soared to fame overnight when she won bronze at the Games in Tokyo. Now the Olympian is dealing with a fresh challenge: she’s grown taller.

I measured slightly taller at my last medical. I pretended I hadn’t seen it. It’s a bit of a problem.

Lo competes in the featherweight class which has a maximum weight of 57 kg. But now she’s 184.5 centimeters tall. Height is an advantage, but it does mean she’ll have to work hard to control her weight and stay in that class. At the same time, she’s been unable to train normally for the last six months as she recovers from an injury, and needs to eat well for her rehabilitation. That makes weight loss tough.

I said to her, “After Paris, we’re going up to the heavier class. Let’s not compete in featherweight again.” She keeps getting taller. She should gain 2 kg for each centimeter she grows. Every time she passes the weight test, I’m like, “Yes! Past the first hurdle.”

Lo reportedly frequently dines on a meal of just salad and water, tough for her coach to watch. Lo is Taiwan’s only taekwondo athlete going to the Paris Olympics. She’s competing not only for herself but for the whole taekwondo world in Taiwan.

Of course I feel the pressure. I want to take the strength of everyone in taekwondo with me into battle at the Paris Olympics. For myself, I would love to get a medal, and to put up a good fight for taekwondo.

Alone in a team of one and nursing an injury, Lo admits the pressure is on. But she has ways to cool off, and luckily one of them heading out into the ring.

Baseball is very relaxing. Sometimes you miss the ball, but you feel great when you do hit one.

Lo is diligent in her recovery and hopes to make a good return to health before she heads to France. Perhaps a medal could be in the offing.

前進巴黎奧運 羅嘉翎目標再奪一面獎牌

在東京奧運拿下銅牌、一戰成名的跆拳道「國民女友」羅嘉翎,今年要再度出征巴黎奧運,不同的是,這回她是唯一代表選手,除了期許自己能夠再奪一面獎牌,也希望能為跆拳道爭一口氣。目前備戰除了要跟腳踝舊傷對抗,羅嘉翎還有一個困擾,就是身高超過180公分的她又長高了,必須嚴格控制飲食,維持體重。

在東京奧運奪銅、一戰成名的羅嘉翎,又長高了,成為最近的困擾。

“上次體檢的時候有點變高,但是我就是當作沒有看到。這是我的困擾。”

出戰57公斤級賽事,羅嘉翎卻長到184.5公分,雖然身高是優勢,但她也因此更加辛苦地在控制體重,加上上半年因為舊傷無法訓練又得補充營養,減重也成為現在的重要課題。

“我也跟她講說,這個比賽完我們就跳量級,我們不要再打57(公斤)了,而且她又一直在長高,長高一公分又要多兩公斤,她每次體重一過我都,耶!打贏第一場的感覺。”

常常都只能吃生菜配水,讓教練看了都覺得好辛苦。而且今年巴黎奧運羅嘉翎是跆拳道項目唯一的台灣代表,肩負的是個人,也是跆拳道的面子之爭。

“壓力一定是有的嘛,也希望可以帶著所有跆拳道,大家一起的力量去征戰巴黎奧運。自己也是會希望就是可以真的拿到一面牌,替跆拳道也是爭一口氣。”

負傷又是孤軍奮戰,讓羅嘉翎坦言有壓力,不過她也有自己的一套紓壓方式,就是到打擊練習場報到。

“打棒球真的滿紓壓的,有時候揮不到,但是你揮到的時候就會開心。”

羅嘉翎努力養傷,希望健康參賽,目標再拿一面奧運獎牌。
