Civic groups declare support for Lai’s three committees

Civic groups are throwing their support behind President Lai Ching-te’s three committees. The new committees, for defense, climate change, and health care, are to be led by the president himself. Opposition parties have decried Lai’s initiative as a power grab. But activists defended the president on Tuesday, arguing that he was acting within his constitutional authority.
Even with an aggressor lurking at the doorstep, some Taiwanese refuse to recognize the enemy, activists said, noting that many retired generals have traveled to China for United Front activities. Former defense chief Tsai Ming-hsien said this was a worrying trend.

Now that President Lai has established the Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience Committee at the Presidential Office, we can bring an end to the vicious cycle of Taiwan skepticism and U.S. skepticism. We can start to trust Taiwan and trust the U.S., which will foster a positive cycle.
Last Wednesday, President Lai Ching-te established the National Climate Change Response Committee, the Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience Committee, and the Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee. Ko Wen-je, chair of the Taiwan People’s Party, decried the move as a power grab. On Tuesday, about a dozen civic groups pushed back at the opposition, declaring their support for Lai.

In establishing these three committees, President Lai is not overstepping his authority as spelled out in the Constitution. These committees will not make policies, but serve only as advisory bodies. Our Constitution states that the president is commander-in-chief of the armed forces. Isn’t “whole-of-society defense” a part of his duties as commander-in-chief?

Civic groups applauded Lai’s committees as, quote, forward-thinking. They emphasized that through the whole-of-defense committee, Lai will be able to unite the nation and better prepare the people to defend themselves.

賴清德總統就職滿月宣布，將由他擔任召集人，成立「國家氣候變遷對策」、「全社會防衛韌性」、「健康台灣推動」等3個委員會，替國家發展擬定戰略和民間力量展開對話；對此，前國防部長蔡明憲今天與台灣社、台灣教授協會等學者、團體，共同舉行記者會，表達力挺賴總統的立場。
中國對台灣虎視眈眈，但部分國人卻敵我不分，許多退將甚至自甘前往中國被統戰，這讓前國防部長蔡明憲，相當憂心。

賴清德總統於19日宣布成立「國家氣候變遷對策委員會」、「全社會防衛韌性委員會」和「健康台灣推動委員會」，在野黨包括民眾黨主席柯文哲都酸是「擴權」，10多個民間團體看不下去，表達力挺賴總統的立場。

民間團體肯定賴總統此舉是具有「前瞻性的作為」，尤其稱讚「全社會防衛韌性委員會」的作用，更可加深全民國防，團結台灣。
