2024-07-07

Chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation Cheng Wen-tsan was detained on Saturday for bribery allegations related to a development project in Taoyuan when Cheng served as mayor of that city. After a hearing, Cheng was released on bail of NT$5 million. On Sunday, the SEF issued a statement announcing that Cheng had already tendered his resignation.

The SEF stressed that Cheng would fight the allegations in court to prove his innocence. Meanwhile, the Presidential Office said through a spokesperson that it respects Cheng’s decision to resign, and that follow-up measures for his replacement would be handled in accordance with procedures. In the face of the political storm, the DPP said its Anti-Corruption Commission would also launch an investigation into the matter on Monday.
