Consumer discovers cheap oilfish sold as cod

A fishmonger in Taoyuan was recently found to be selling cheap oilfish in the place of expensive cod. The commercial value of oilfish is low as it is difficult to digest, potentially causing diarrhea if consumed in large quantities. A consumer ombudsman called on vendors to clearly label their wares and avoid deceiving consumers.

The bounty of the sea is on display at traditional wet markets, with some deals on offer as vendors near closing time. One customer revealed that on a recent trip to a market in Taoyuan, they found a fishmonger selling three filets of cod for only NT$200. It seemed like a fantastic bargain, until they realized that the supposed cod was actually oilfish.

Cod was vanishingly hard to find on a visit to Nanmen Market in Taoyuan. Since it is highly valued, it usually has to be ordered ahead of time. Most of what you see sold at the market is halibut or tooth fish. The worst quality of them all is oilfish. Oilfish contains wax ester which—although not poisonous—is hard to digest, potentially causing diarrhea if eaten. But some unscrupulous sellers still offer the fish masquerading as other kinds to deceive consumers.

Cod is triple the price. Oilfish is cheap. The skin is rough and it’s oily. If you’re not careful it can harm your stomach.

There’s a threefold difference in cost alone. Yet in Taiwan, importing and eating oilfish is allowed. Only Japan and Italy have completely banned its sale. The US, Canada, Australia, and other countries recommend against eating it.

Only gadiformes may be labeled as cod. Toothfish and halibut should be labeled with their species alongside their common name.

You get what you pay for. Consumers should get confirmation before buying to make sure that no problems arise from eating the wrong kind of fish.

桃園的市場有商人以便宜的「油魚」,混充高價「鱈魚」販售謀取暴利,因為油魚的商業價值低,吃進人體難以消化,吃多了有拉肚子風險,卻仍有不肖業者魚目混珠。消保官呼籲業者,要明確標示魚種,切勿欺騙消費者。

來到傳統市場,攤商販售的魚種琳瑯滿目,接近收攤時還會有特價活動,只是近日傳出有民眾,到桃園的市場消費,市場魚攤以促銷鱈魚三片兩百元優惠販售,看似買到賺到,但業者口中的鱈魚,其實是以油魚混充。

實際來到桃園南門市場走一遭,發現業者幾乎沒有在賣鱈魚,因為價格高,必須用預訂的方式才能買到。市場常見的大多都是扁鱈、圓鱈或是比目魚,但最差就是油魚,因為油魚含有蠟酯,雖然沒有毒性,但人體難以消化,因此吃下肚恐怕會拉肚子,但還是有不肖業者為了謀取暴利,刻意魚目混珠欺騙消費者。

光是成本就差了3倍,不過在台灣,進口或食用油魚都不禁止,目前全球只有日本及義大利,禁止販售油魚。美國、加拿大、澳洲等國不建議食用.

一分錢一分貨,消費者購買前應該問清楚,避免買到假鱈魚而吃出問題。
