A cross-strait love story behind a Chiayi tourist hotspot

Chiayi County is home to an unexpected gem: a museum dedicated to China’s Xinjiang autonomous region. Behind it lies a love story straight out of a romance novel. A Taiwanese businessman was swept off his feet by a woman he met during his travels. After they married, he built a museum in Taiwan to ease her homesickness. Join us in Chiayi as we discover this very special place.

Step inside to discover a riot of colors. The space is filled with Xinjiang artifacts: teacups, teapots, ornaments, and more, each with a unique exotic charm.

Nestled in Chiayi’s Dalin Township, this museum has an array of Xinjiang treasures. It’s a popular tourist destination, but what really sets it apart is the sweet love story of its founders.

I thought she would miss home. I wanted Taiwan to feel like her true home.

Taiwanese businessman Huang Ming-hsiung fell head over heels for Aliya, a woman he met in Xinjiang. But after they got married, Aliya found herself homesick in Taiwan. So Huang built a museum dedicated to Xinjiang, to give her a piece of home.

The museum is a window into another world. For Aliya, it’s a comforting reminder of home. For visitors, it’s a chance to experience Xinjiang without leaving Taiwan.

緩解妻子思鄉之苦! 尪暖心打造"新疆文化館"

嘉義縣大林鎮有一座充滿異域風情的新疆文化館，裡頭擺設不少來自新疆的物品，相當特別。這座文物館創立的背後，隱藏一段浪漫愛情故事；當年一名台商旅遊，愛上新疆女孩，兩人結婚後，老公為了緩解太太思鄉之苦，夫妻倆在台灣打造了新疆文物館，也成為當地打卡景點。

走入場館內，色彩鮮豔華麗，裡頭滿滿來自新疆的物品，有茶杯、茶壺、各種擺飾，充滿濃濃異域風情。

這一間發現新疆文化館，位在嘉義縣大林鎮，裡頭蒐藏不少新疆物件，是熱門觀光景點，而在這間文化館的背後，有屬於館長夫妻浪漫的愛情故事。

身為台商的黃明雄，愛上新疆女孩，但兩人結婚後，太太到台灣卻經常思念家鄉。疼愛太太的黃明雄，打造了新疆文物館，彷彿把太太的家鄉味搬來台灣。

Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley is visiting Taiwan. Speaking at the Ketagalan Forum on Wednesday Haley advocated for Taiwan not only to join the World Health Organization but also to become a full member of the United Nations. On Friday, President Lai Ching-te met with Haley to express gratitude for her longstanding support of Taiwan. Haley said she wanted to show Taiwanese people that Americans support them and urged Taiwanese people to tell Americans why they should focus on Taiwan.

The day after the Ketagalan Forum, President Lai Ching-te met again with former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, to thank her for her active support of Taiwan.

First and foremost, I want to thank Ambassador Haley for her advocacy for Taiwan during her tenure as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. She spoke up on behalf of Taiwan and expressed her frustration over Taiwan’s inability to enter the UN building. She has strongly advocated that Taiwan’s health and human rights should not be excluded from the World Health Organization and has encouraged the UN and other international organizations to accept Taiwan.

I came here because I think it’s important to go back to the America people and tell them why they should care about Taiwan. During her time as U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Haley saw how China suppressed Taiwan’s international space. Not only did she see the significant differences between Taiwan and China, but she also understood the importance of preventing China from succeeding in its efforts.

Taiwan, situated on the first island chain in the Indo-Pacific, will certainly strengthen its own national defense capabilities and enhance its economic resilience. At the same time, Taiwan stands together with the democratic camp to exert a collective deterrent effect. Lai told foreign guests that Taiwan helps itself and is helped by others, steadfastly upholding the values of democracy and freedom.

‘Clueless’ star Alicia Silverstone is being criticized online for her ignorance picking and eating a fruit from the side of the road in London. The fruit, which she had thought was a tomato, turned out to be a toxic Jerusalem cherry, known as "coral cherry" in Taiwan. Doctors have said that the plant, which is commonly used as an ornamental plant, contains the neurotoxin solanine. Consuming it can cause symptoms such as gastrointestinal distress and vomiting, and in severe cases, respiratory failure.

Hollywood actress Alicia Silverstone was passing by a private garden in London when she noticed a pot of plants covered with small green, orange, and red fruits. She casually picked an orange one, mistaking it for a tomato, and put it directly into her mouth.

Alicia uploaded a video of the incident to TikTok, which garnered over 5 million views in just two days and sparked widespread discussion. The plant, scientifically known as Solanum pseudocapsicum or "coral cherry," can be harmful if ingested.

This type of alkaloid can cause irritation to the gastrointestinal tract if ingested by mistake, leading to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. There are also concerns that it could cause neurotoxic effects, such as respiratory failure, shock, and altered consciousness.

Solanum pseudocapsicum, also known as "coral cherry," is quite common in Taiwan and is found in many low-elevation areas. It is a fairly widespread plant due to its long flowering period and attractive fruits, and is often used as an ornamental plant."

Doctors warn that all parts of the coral cherry plant are toxic and should not be consumed. If ingestion occurs and causes discomfort, it is essential to seek medical attention immediately.

Stunning orange daylilies bloom in Hualien

The end of summer is orange daylily season in Hualien, and visitors from all over Taiwan come to see the flowers bloom. However this year, these orange daylilies are struggling in some locations. In Fuli’s Liushishi Mountain, the flowers are sparse due to a drought earlier in the year. In contrast, the fields at Chike Mountain in Yuli are packed with golden blooms.

A sea of orange daylilies stretches as far as the eye can see, contrasting with the deep blue sky. This is Chike Mountain in Yuli, a place so beautiful that visitors don’t want to leave.

I’ve been in Chike Mountain for more than a month. I’ve seen it go from no flowers to a sea of flowers. The air here is really fresh.

But over at Liushishi Mountain in Fuli, which is also famed for its orange daylilies, the fields remain mostly green. Though there are a few blooms here and there, travelers who have visited both say the difference is stark.

Only about 5% of the flowers have bloomed at Liushishi Mountain. There’s a lot more here.

Let’s compare the two sites. The fields in Chike and Liushishi look very different. But why? They are both in Hualien and both sowed with the same orange daylilies, yet one is in full bloom and the other is flowerless.

It turns out the difference is due to a drought that struck Fuli in March and April this year, which has prevented the flowers from blooming.

There aren’t enough water sources on Liushishi Mountain, so the water comes from rainwater that we collect. We have ditches equipped with water collectors that feed the water to a reservoir.

Right now, the flower fields are at their most beautiful. Our occupancy figures for September are on the low side, so we hope more tourists from all over will come to the mountains more often.

Tourist numbers have plummeted in Hualien due to the impact of natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons. But local hostel operators say now is the perfect season to view the flowers during the day and the stars at night. They say Hualien is a great choice to enjoy the last few days of the summer holidays.

Photo of AC technician sets internet abuzz

A photo of an air conditioning technician has gone viral, due to the man’s impressive physique. Internet users are calling him “strong and handsome,” and they want his contact info, claiming that their air conditioners are broken, too. Let’s meet the man at the center of it all, 24-year-old Lee Yen-po.

This photo was shared on social media, with the caption: “Are all AC technicians so buff these days? My mother kept trying to chat him up.” The post quickly went viral, with one internet user exclaiming: “My air conditioner is broken, too!”

This photograph has set the internet abuzz, with internet users saying, “Call that technician because my air conditioner is broken, too.” Today we’ve tracked down the man himself.

Electric drill in hand, 24-year-old Lee Yen-po gets to work. He entered the AC installation trade at a tender age, learning from his brother-in-law. Although he spends most of his time on his job, he also finds time for weight training.

I train about five times a week, training my whole body. I think that weight training is extremely helpful if you’re in the AC service industry, because it reduces the likelihood of getting injured. You learn how to exert force with your muscles. A window AC unit can weigh 90-something kilograms and you’ve got to carry it up stairs.

Hauling heavy weight is all in a day’s work. He can install one AC unit in a matter of minutes.

He’s been doing this for three years now. When he first started, he didn’t even know how to use pliers or an electric screwdriver. But in just three short months, he mastered all of these tools.

His brother-in-law heaps praise on his work ethic. Lee is a bit bashful in front of our camera, but he doesn’t hold back on social media, where he shares photos of his physique. Even in a work shirt, he can’t hide his big muscles. Sometimes that’s more a curse than a blessing.

Sometimes when I’m working, older women will notice. They’ll think my physique is pretty good and want to touch my muscles, but I’m a bit shy about that.

Thanks to his muscles, Lee is now an online sensation. Once word gets out that he’s hardworking, too, his fan base should only get bigger.
