Tainan mayor welcomes AMD Investment in city

In a bid to transform Taiwan into an artificial intelligence powerhouse, the National Science and Technology Council has launched an ambitious investment program. The council will invest NT$36 billion over five years to promote smart tech industrial ecosystems in Southern Taiwan. The first beneficiary of the plan is U.S. tech firm AMD, which is set to establish R&D centers in Tainan and Kaohsiung. Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che says his city is very excited about the investment, adding that the local government will provide all the assistance it can. Let’s hear from Huang.

AMD has decided to set up R&D centers in Taiwan, and has chosen to do so in Tainan and Kaohsiung. We strongly approve of this decision and welcome them to our city. Shalun is an extremely suitable location for this, as it is a center for smart green energy. Its transport links, amenities and its status as a research hub make it a great choice.

Next to the science city is the Tainan campus of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. The College of Artificial Intelligence and the College of Photonics are all close to Shalun Smart Green Energy Science City.

If AMD grows well here, it will expand also to other places in Southern Taiwan. We will definitely provide assistance, should any other international firms be willing to come.

AMD’s announcement was made after a meeting between Senior Vice President David Wang and economics minister J. W. Kuo on Wednesday. The projects will cost NT$8.64 billion. AMD will provide NT$5.33 billion of the funds and NT$3.31 billion will come from government subsidies. The research hubs will focus on silicon photonics, artificial intelligence and heterogeneous integration.
