Zhubei lion statue delights with shiny puffed cheeks

On Hanlin Bridge along Xianzheng Ninth Road in Zhubei City stand 13 pairs of bronze lion statues. They’re designed along a range of cultural and historical styles, like Hakka, temple, and folk. But there’s also one that looks just adorable. Its shiny buffed cheeks have even caught the internet’s attention.

People reach out to rub the left cheek and then the right one. No one who crosses this bridge can resist the adorable statue. So what about it is so charming? Our reporter went to find out.

On Hanlin Bridge in Hsinchu’s Zhubei City are 13 pairs of bronze lions. They represent the 13 townships in the county. But why are the cheeks of this adorable statue next to me so shiny?

Passerby
It’s so cute! And its cheeks are probably so shiny because a lot of people rub them when walking past. So it gets shinier over time.

Passerby
Maybe because everyone who walks past will rub its cheeks for good luck or something. I’ll also do it.

The 13 pairs of statues were installed when the bridge went up in 1996. They’re in a variety of styles, including Hakka, temple, and folk. There’s also this cutesy cartoonish one with the shiny cheeks that’s gotten lots of attention online recently.

Hsinchu County Cultural Affairs Bureau
In principle, the lions on this bridge were arranged chronologically by dynasty. So they’re quite diverse, evolving from the more crude designs from before the Northern and Southern dynasties, to the more refined styles found after the Ming Dynasty.

There’s also a local legend that rubbing the statue before taking an exam will bring good results. With so many different historical styles, the bridge makes for a different kind of destination.

2024-09-01
