The American Institute in Taiwan held its first press conference with its new director, Raymond Greene, who is on his third posting to Taiwan. In his opening remarks he underscored the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. He also stressed that the U.S.’ bipartisan support for Taiwan was something that would not change. Let’s hear from him.
Raymond Greene
AIT director
U.S. support for Taiwan is and will continue to be rock-solid, principled, and bipartisan. In response to the PRC threat, Congress has for the first time authorized the use of Foreign Military Financing and Presidential Drawdown Authority. The United States is also building a latticework of alliances in the Indo-Pacific region to enhance our deterrence capabilities. These efforts, together with Taiwan’s defense investments and impressive military reforms, are not meant to prepare for war but to prevent it.
Earlier this year, President Lai Ching-te was expected to visit Taiwan’s Latin American allies at the end of the year, with transit stops in the U.S. But the plans appear to have fallen through. Greene avoided commenting on the matter directly, stating simply that the U.S. would offer assistance, should Lai make a visit in the future.
