Banqiao native offers “Taiwan tapas” in Dresden delighting the local palates

Construction work has begun on the proposed TSMC factory in the eastern German city of Dresden. The chipmaking giant expects the facility to be up and running in 2027. FTV has sent a team to Germany to cover the story, and along the way, it came across a Taiwanese restaurant run by a woman from Banqiao. Her establishment, which she named Taiwan Tapas, offers Taiwanese night market favorites, such as salt and pepper fried chicken, beef noodle soup, and braised pork rice, and over the course of five years, they’ve delighted the palates of local Germans.

Two hundred kilometers away from the capital Berlin sits Dresden, in the eastern German state of Saxony.

Lin Fen-ping
Restaurant owner
I worked at this sushi restaurant run by a German. I did well there. But I thought instead of working for somebody, I might as well work for myself.

Hailing from New Taipei’s Banqiao, the proprietor Lin Fen-ping has lived in Germany for 20 years now after getting married to a local. Her restaurant has now entered its fifth year. She’s adjusted the taste of popular Taiwanese dishes to cater to the locals’ taste.

Yeh Wei-hsiang
FTV reporter
Do not think that you can only get authentic Taiwanese dishes in Taiwan. This restaurant is located on a street in Dresden’s new town.

Lin Fen-ping
Restaurant owner
I just thought if Taiwanese food is so tasty, why not open a restaurant here. And as a businessperson, I should know where the business opportunities are. Thirty percent of our customers are Taiwanese and Chinese, and 70% are Germans or foreign travelers.

As business improved over the years, the restaurant’s monthly sales have exceeded NT$600,000. When she learned that TSMC was going to set up a factory in Germany, she was delighted, expecting to see more of her compatriots coming to her shop.

Liu Shih-hung
Taiwanese expat
Of course I miss the food. Like that Salt and pepper fried chicken I just had, I took a bite and I knew the owner prepped the meat in the exact same way that it’s done in Taiwan.

Lin Fen-ping
Restaurant owner
Over the last two or three years, many people have suggested to me that I should open a place in Hamburg, Berlin, Nuremberg, and so forth. But it’s really impossible for me to do it all by myself.

Hanging on the walls of her restaurant are photos of a night market from her hometown. Despite being far away from there, she’s still very attached to her beloved Taiwan, which she’s promoting in her own way.
