VP Hsiao and AIT Director Greene attend disaster drills hosted by a defense NGO

2024-09-15

Ahead of National Disaster Prevention Day, a think tank held disaster drills over the weekend, teaching the public how to respond in the event of a disaster. Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim and the de facto U.S. ambassador to Taiwan Raymond Greene were both on hand, and spoke about Taiwan-U.S. collaboration to combat disinformation. Enoch Wu, who heads the NGO, also spoke at the event, pointing out that 20,000 people have already received disaster-response training, and many more expect to receive training in the coming year.

To mark Taiwan’s National Disaster Prevention Day, which is Sept. 21, national security and civil defense think tank Forward Alliance held disaster drills in Taipei over the weekend. Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim and AIT Director Raymond Greene were both on site observing the drills.

Hsiao Bi-khim
Vice president
We are all opposed to war, and we especially do not want to experience loss of life and property due to climate change or other man-made disasters. By being better prepared, we can protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities from harm.

Raymond Greene
AIT director
Cyber security and countering disinformation will support all of these efforts. With our adversaries increasingly using cyber attacks to disrupt our critical infrastructure, we need to redouble our efforts to secure our networks. We also know that malign actors will spread disinformation during a crisis or natural disaster to sow chaos and disorder. Taiwan is the world leader in countering disinformation, and we are proud of our work together to expose and disrupt these threats, including by promoting greater media and digital literacy.

Greene described cyber attacks and disinformation as new types of challenges facing governments. Meanwhile, Hsiao said that she was involved in negotiating international social resilience programs during her time as representative to the U.S.

Enoch Wu
Forward Alliance
We have provided psychological support to the public sector, professional partners, social groups, and most importantly, religious groups. Step by step, we have successfully trained more than 20,000 private volunteers. Everyone has basic disaster response capabilities, and with everyone working together, the number trained will definitely be larger by this time next year.

Separately, President Lai Cheng-te is to establish a Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience Committee on Thursday next week. The committee would meet with experts from various fields and discuss plans for strengthening society’s resilience.
