Urinal users asked to aim at funnel-like contraption to generate electricity

A strange funnel-like contraption was recently installed in the urinals at a Miaoli community center, raising a couple of eyebrows. What’s more, a sign on the wall of the toilets instructs users to aim into the funnel when they do their business. It turns out the urine collection devices are not the ideation of a mad scientist, but a way to generate electricity through a microbial fuel cell.
This strange contraption in the urinals has left kids scratching their heads. Why is there a funnel in there of all places?
A sign on the wall says “A science experiment is underway, please pee in the funnel.” What is going on? Let’s hear an explanation from head of the village.

This is a microbial fuel cell. Inside, there are microbes that are constantly active and they create a potential difference. This energy is collected in power banks so that we can store it and later use it as a power source.
The village is working with the Industrial Technology Research Institute to collect urine for a microbial fuel cell, which generates electricity from the oxidization and breakdown of urine. According to studies conducted abroad, just 500ml of urine can generate enough electricity to power a mobile phone for 3 hours. In addition, the decomposed urine can be used as an all-natural liquid fertilizer.

聽過用「尿液」發電嗎？苗栗縣頭屋鄉，明德村社區活動中心的男廁小便斗，另外裝設一個漏斗，小便斗上還張貼著「請將尿液集中於漏斗內」的標語，引發民眾好奇？明德村長謝文達對此說明，這是「尿液發電」！
進到明德社區活動公廁，小朋友有點摸不著頭緒，一個個小便斗上，都另外架設了一個漏斗，引發好奇！

“在這個微生物燃料電池裡，它就是在裡面，我們有微生物菌會持續產生作用，產生所謂的微生物電位差。然後蒐集到我們的隨身電源，這邊有隨身電源可以把電量儲存起來，然後它這個就會產生電量。”
村長指出，社區與工研院合作，收集起來的尿液，再利用「微生物電池」裝置中的微生物，在氧化分解尿液中，產生電力。以國外實驗數據，只要500毫升尿液，就足夠轉換能量，替手機帶來3小時的電力。分解完成的尿液，還可作為周邊植物的天然液肥使用。
