US Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump last Saturday repeated his controversial claim that Taiwan “stole” the US’ chip business. On Tuesday, during a legislative hearing, Premier Cho Jung-tai and Minister of Economic Affairs, Kuo Jhy-huei both said they disagree with Trump’s comment. They reiterated that Taiwan-US relations remain stable and thriving, no matter what the US presidential candidates may claim on the final countdown to their elections.
Only 10 days before the presidential elections, candidate Donald Trump claimed once again that Taiwan had stolen the US’ semiconductor business.

US Republican presidential candidate
You know, Taiwan, they stole our chip business. They want us to protect and they want protection, but they don’t pay us the money for protection. You know, the mob makes you pay money, right?
Trump’s comment likely impacted TSMC American depository receipts on Monday, which plunged by 4.3%, or US$1.41 per share. And on Tuesday, TSMC shares dropped by 0.95%. Over at a legislative hearing on Tuesday, KMT Lawmaker Wang Hung-wei asked Premier Cho Jung-tai whether he agreed with Trump.
Cho Jung-tai
Premier
Of course I disagree. We developed our world-leading semiconductor industry on our own.
Wang Hung-wei
Lawmaker (KMT)
So is our chip business a thief? Did we steal the US’ chip business?
Kuo Jyh-hwei
Minister of Economic Affairs
I’m telling you, no.
Both the premier and the Minister of Economic Affairs, Kuo Jyh-huei disagreed with Trump. And Kuo said he agrees to disagree with US presidential candidates before their elections. They both stressed that Taiwan-US relations are stable and thriving.
Kuo Jyh-hwei
Minister of Economic Affairs
US policy on Taiwan has been very stable over the long term. I believe both parties have the same approach toward Taiwan. We respect the candidates’ freedom of speech before the elections.
Cho Jung-tai
Premier
Taiwan and the US are likeminded democratic allies, and have always had a very good relationship. I also believe that both major US parties are absolutely on the same page when it comes to US-Taiwan relations, whether now or in the future. I believe the US will have a successful democratic election, and in the future we’ll continue to deepen Taiwan-US bilateral relations.
Though Trump’s remarks were aimed at rallying US voters, their effects nonetheless reverberated across the Pacific Ocean.
