Earlier this month, South Africa ordered Taiwan to relocate its de facto embassy out of the country’s capital Pretoria before Oct. 30, adding that the move was non-negotiable. But things seem to have changed after Taiwan refused to comply. South Africa now says it is willing to hold talks with Taiwan concerning bilateral relations. Let’s hear from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Jeff Liu
Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson
Thanks to the joint efforts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Taiwan’s representative office in South Africa, and to the attention the issue drew from observers, the South African government has communicated with our representative office regarding its unilateral orders to relocate the office before the deadline of Oct. 30. The South African government says it is willing to engage in bilateral consultations with us through existing official channels to conduct negotiations about the future of the bilateral relationship.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on South Africa, as a G20 country, not to use coercive methods against the representative office or interfere in its operations before a consensus has been reached. It added that Taiwan would listen to South Africa’s view on the future of bilateral relations with Taiwan and exchange opinions based on mutual respect and dignity.
