Nuit Blanche Taipei to be held on Nov. 2

The annual nighttime art festival, Nuit Blanche, is set to kick off on the afternoon of Nov. 2 and last until the early hours of Nov. 3. The event will be held at Da’an Forest Park and feature art installations, performances, and a parade. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in for a sneak peak!

The main stage for this year’s Nuit Blanche is Da’an Forest Park. The theme of the festival is “Nocturnal Animal Party.” A series of performances, ecological walks, installations, screenings, and cultural markets will be held starting from 2 p.m. till 2 a.m.

I connected the day and night of Paris and Taipei through a French animal parade led by “Les Yétis Pop.” This also responds to this year’s theme: Nocturnal Animal Party. “Les Yétis Pop” are fantasy animals on roller skates designed by French artist Gregg Brehin. There are three large wooden totems on site, which will be the starting point of this French animal parade.

One highlight of this year’s Nuit Blanche is a parade held every hour between 7 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Inspired by Taiwan’s nocturnal owls, LED masks will be handed out to the public at the parade. Visitors can also make their own masks and get a chance to win round-trip tickets to Paris.

We will also distribute owl masks here. The colors are very bright. We also encourage everyone to make their own masks because the French Office in Taipei is hosting a competition. The best mask creator will win a round-trip ticket to Paris.

While Da’an Forest Park will serve as the main venue for the festival, the Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab will also have a series of activities on Nov. 2.

台北著名藝文活動「白晝之夜」今年將在11月2日下午2點至11月3日凌晨2點舉辦，地點選在大安區為主場域、大安森林公園則為主要展區，以「夜行動物派對」主題，邀請群眾一起重返自然萬物的懷抱，將城市作為與自然生態連結的起點。

今年「白晝之夜」主要展區選在大安森林公園，以「夜行動物派對」主題，下午2點到凌晨2點，一系列表演、生態踏查、裝置藝術、露天電影院、文創市集陸續展開。

Typhoon Kong-rey delays concerts headlined by Mayday

Hualien had been looking forward to a boost in tourism this weekend, but all the excitement has been hampered by Typhoon Kong-rey. Pop-rock band Mayday was originally set to headline a series of concerts in Kaohsiung and Hualien from this Friday to Sunday to drive tourism to the area. But the concerts have now been canceled. With the new dates and roster yet to be announced, music fans and Hualien locals alike are kept on their toes.

Workers undo the knots to remove the canvasses tied onto the stage. It was only erected the day before, but their hard work was all in vain due to Typhoon Kong-rey.

On Facebook, Mayday’s record label announced the postponement of the “2024 Just Love It” concerts, which would’ve been held this Friday to Sunday. The reason is none other than the imminent landfall of Typhoon Kong-rey. The new dates and roster are yet to be confirmed. The post attracted many concertgoers and local businesses, commenting that although the postponement is a pity, safety comes first.

Well, the typhoon will affect the whole stage setup, and many hotel reservations will be canceled. It’s best to stay safe.

It’s quite a pity. Hualien could finally have Mayday perform here, and now they’re not coming anymore. I do hope they’ll come to Hualien some other time if there’s a chance.

Originally, the Kaohsiung and Hualien concerts were to be headlined by pop-rock band Mayday, along with 13 other acts including Rene Liu, Tarcy Su, Energy and Accusefive. The Hualien concerts scheduled for the weekend had been widely anticipated to be a much needed boost to the local economy following the April 3 earthquake.

Hotel occupancy rates in Hualien over the first weekend of November had exceeded 80% after the concert dates were announced back in September. Now that Typhoon Kong-rey is tracking towards Eastern Taiwan, Hualien will have to wait a little longer for tourism to bounce back.

Premier, economics minister disagree that Taiwan ‘stole’ US chip business

US Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump last Saturday repeated his controversial claim that Taiwan “stole” the US’ chip business. On Tuesday, during a legislative hearing, Premier Cho Jung-tai and Minister of Economic Affairs, Kuo Jhy-huei both said they disagree with Trump’s comment. They reiterated that Taiwan-US relations remain stable and thriving, no matter what the US presidential candidates may claim on the final countdown to their elections.

Only 10 days before the presidential elections, candidate Donald Trump claimed once again that Taiwan had stolen the US’ semiconductor business.

You know, Taiwan, they stole our chip business. They want us to protect and they want protection, but they don’t pay us the money for protection. You know, the mob makes you pay money, right?

Trump’s comment likely impacted TSMC American depository receipts on Monday, which plunged by 4.3%, or US$1.41 per share. And on Tuesday, TSMC shares dropped by 0.95%. Over at a legislative hearing on Tuesday, KMT Lawmaker Wang Hung-wei asked Premier Cho Jung-tai whether he agreed with Trump.

Though Trump’s remarks were aimed at rallying US voters, their effects nonetheless reverberated across the Pacific Ocean.

Chang Tai 19 exercise underway in Changhua

This year’s Chang Tai 19 military exercise is underway in Changhua. The drills kicked off last week, with a focus on creating a realistic battle scenario. For the first time, reservists under the new 14-day training regimen have been included in the drills, to boost asymmetric warfare capabilities. The seven-day exercises are scheduled to end on Nov. 1, but could be called off early due to Typhoon Kong-rey.

An enemy attack is reported. Drones immediately rise to the sky to survey the situation. After the data is confirmed by higher-ups, a counterattack is launched.

M60A3 tanks proceed to the mission area. This is the Army’s Chang Tai 19 exercise, simulating an attack on Taiwan. In an effort to create a realistic battle scenario, tanks drove alongside private vehicles on rural roads, shocking many locals.

The focus of the exercise was on five key strategic operations, and testing full-load capabilities. The drill simulates real battlefield conditions in order to train our troops thoroughly and improve decision-making skills of commanders at the battalion level and below. It also trains for our staff officers’ operational capabilities.

The Chang Tai 19 is a major annual drill for Taiwan’s military, running 24-hours a day for a whole week. Reservists called back for training under the new 14-day regimen are also taking part for the first time.

Reservists undergoing the 14-day training regimen are also being included in the exercise. That’s an important way to integrate reserve and active duty systems, so as to better implement the military’s asymmetric warfare strategy. Since reservists have experience serving in the army, they can quickly make use of their previous training to adapt to the new context.

The Chang Tai 19 exercise is scheduled to end on Nov. 1, but with Tropical Storm Kong-rey approaching, troops may be called back before then to help in disaster prevention and response.

Young man who grabbed girl on the street detained

The Taoyuan District Court has agreed to the detention of an 18-year-old man who grabbed a young girl in Guishan District on Sunday. The young man, who has a diagnosed mental disability, is suspected of engaging in attempted sexual assault. The defendant says he had only wanted to make friends with the girl.

On Sunday, a young man grabbed a girl walking alone in broad daylight in Taoyuan’s Guishan District. When he got arrested, he said he had just wanted to make friends with the girl. The girl’s mother says she was dismayed after finding that the man had a diagnosed mental disability.

When I heard that he had a disability certificate, my heart broke, because I know that the law grants protection to people with mental diseases like him.

Prosecutors requested that the man be held incommunicado, saying he attempted to sexually assault a girl under the age of 14 and engaged in aggravated forced obscenity. The Taoyuan District Court agreed to the detention due to the severity of the case but decided not to hold him incommunicado. It said that, although there was no evidence that his release could lead to witness tampering, there was a concern that he could commit repeat offenses.

It’s best to keep him detained. I think that people like him shouldn’t be let out. Everyone finds them scary.

After two months, he’ll come out and it’ll be the same all over again. When he was young, he wasn’t aggressive like this. He just played with his friends. But now that he’s an adult, he might have different needs. It’s not like it’s just a one off, it’s happened many times already.

Local residents say they are deeply disturbed, as it is not the first instance that the man had lost control. Some say they worry that he’ll act up again after being released from detention in two months, arguing that he should be sent to a dedicated institution.

We asked the Department of Public Health, and they said they couldn’t find the man in the community safety net that keeps track of patients’ mental health. The system should be reevaluated, as this incident has shown there is a big social problem.

The parents of the girl say they hope that the incident won’t repeat itself in the future, adding that they hope they’ll have a safe neighborhood once again.

Cross-disciplinary music festival to kick off in November

A music festival incorporating sounds, lectures, and visual arts is set to kick off in November. Sonic Shaman: TheCube Forum Music Festival will bring together more than 30 groups of performers from Taiwan and abroad. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in for a look!

Musician WADE DAO and Sound artist Xu Chia-chun take to the stage. They will be performing at the Sonic Shaman: TheCube Forum Music Festival in November, which they helped organize.

At the event, the brand that I work at is called Melting Part. We will be sharing four different programs. The first one highlights a celebrated Taiwanese saxophonist Minyen Hsieh. He has brought along a very skilled sound artist called Nick Tsai. Afterwards, we have a Melting Part program where beat makers and our dancers have an experimental cross-boundary jam. We also have a contemporary hip hop showcase.

Although it is called a music festival, it is actually an event that hopes to go beyond the traditional music festival. We have several highlights. The first one is that we hope to break through boundaries and create new forms of performance. So in the music festival, you will not only see music performances, as in traditional music festivals. We integrated visual arts, performances, and even installation art, independent orchestras, and experimental sounds. We hope to create new experiences and performance models.

The program features over 30 groups of local and international performers over 3 days between Nov. 23 and Dec. 1.

Egg firm exec opens up about the price of eggs this winter

Did you know that almost half of the liquid eggs in Taiwan are supplied by a Chiayi-based firm? Its eggs are used for many products and restaurant meals up and down the country. The firm was recently passed onto a new generation of executive, Ku Hsin-ping, who hopes for a calmer egg market this winter.

This Taiwanese liquid egg supplier has over 5,000 clients all over the country, from breakfast diners to restaurants and premium hotels. Every day, its team of 2 million hens lays eggs that end up on our plates.

We can see that in the second half of the year, even if there’s some fluctuations in the price, it will only be a few dollars. It’s not going to be like last year, when people were scrambling to get hold of eggs, or you could only get one if you were millionaire.

We’re approaching the end of the year, which is when demand for eggs always peaks. Right now, supply outstrips demand, so businesses are able to save on costs. But here’s an interesting fact: for more than a decade, the industry has referred to waste eggshells as “white gold.” Three to four tons are produced every day.

The egg yolk gives them enough nutrition. The egg white gives them muscles. The eggshell gives them calcium, because they break out of the shell, right? What can we use the eggshells for? They can use infrared light for insulation.

Ku hsin-ping has inherited the business from her parents, the founders. She knows the business like the back of her hand. As a child, she would head down to the factory floor to help out in summer and winter vacations. She studied medicine and became a dermatologist, but eventually quit medicine in order to relieve some of her father’s workload.

When I got back for summer and winter vacations, I’d go and knock on the door of my dad’s office. He’d be reading reports with his spectacles on. And suddenly I felt how much he’d aged. In that moment, I thought, “I want to come home and spend more time with him.”

This was the first interview given by the executive in her new role. She shed tears describing her feelings at taking over the 40-year-old company from her aging parents. Her hope is not just to make profits, she said, but to steer the company towards a century of good business.
