NTU researchers invent method to create raw chemicals from exhaust

2024-12-19

In 2022, Taiwan emitted 286 million metric tons of greenhouse gases. Reducing emissions is therefore a new issue as the country aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. With financial backing from the NSTC, a team of researchers at National Taiwan University have invented a new carbon capture technology that can isolate carbon dioxide from exhaust at a 90% efficacy rate, up from 60% originally. The CO2 can then be turned into raw chemicals.

Inside the transparent pipes in this machine, carbon dioxide is captured from combustion exhaust. Then using electrochemical methods, it is turned into raw chemicals. A research team at National Taiwan University developed this new carbon capture technology, which increases efficiency to 90% from 61.7% originally.

With traditional methods, you have to control the heating, cooling, and pressure. You need to input external power, which could generate excess emissions.

After capturing CO2 through a microporous membrane, the machine swaps modes. At first it could only handle 0.2kg per day, but now it’s up to 50kg.Although the scale is still small compared to the global competition that can handle millions of tons, the team is already discussing industry collaboration.

The products it produces can be adjusted in a variety of ways by controlling the kinds of catalysts and conditions used. Every manufacturer will have their own requirements, so we believe it’s necessary to design it to suit the needs of each factory.

The researchers are optimistic about expanding its scale for use in factories and power plants, where exhaust from boilers can be turned into something useful while also reducing emissions.
