An 100-year-old man in Hsinchu is still going strong as a traffic volunteer. Lo Mei-yu has been helping directing traffic for primary schoolkids for over 20 years now. He said the smile on children’s faces is the secret to health and happiness at his age. Let’s see just how happy he is.
It’s 7 a.m., and he’s already on duty. Donning a reflective vest and a flag in hand, he readily starts the day’s work. With his upbeat energy, it’s hard to tell that this traffic volunteer has already turned 100 years old this year.
Lo Mei-yu is affectionately known as “Grandpa Lo.” The primary schoolkids are obviously very fond of him. They’d even high-five him while crossing the street.

He seems to work hard, because he’s over there on the road, almost every day, directing traffic.
Lo previously worked in international trade. He’s been a traffic volunteer at a primary school since retiring more than 20 years ago. He said the secret to living well into old age, apart from regular exercise, is the smile on children’s faces.

I discovered that my motivation is the smile on children’s faces, and the principal’s and parents’ association’s care toward them. I’m really touched. The secret is staying joyful and having no worries, and the smiles I get from kids every day. I’m really happy, really delighted.
The steady presence of Grandpa Lo is highly praised by teachers and parents. The principal said Lo not only helps direct traffic, he’s very involved in all matters of the school.

At the advanced age of 100, he’s still able to contribute to our school. I really think it’s a great blessing to the school.

I’m so grateful for the volunteers and Grandpa Lo for what they do. Because they’re there to ensure road safety for the kids, we don’t have to worry. I hope that I can live to his age and hopefully emulate him.
Lo said whether under the scorching sun or the pouring rain, he’ll always be there at the school gate, so the kids can arrive safely.

新竹縣全縣最高齡的志工羅美瑜，今年剛好滿100歲，卻仍不畏辛勞，幾乎天天到學校，堅持為學生服務，守護學童的交通安全。他也透露為什麼百歲高齡，依然能保持身體健康的秘密，帶您一起來看看，百歲人瑞的長壽小撇步。
早上七點，天色大亮，穿上志工制服，拿上路旗，精神抖擻的準備開始一天交通志工的工作，這是今百歲的羅美瑜阿公，退休後的日常生活。
每一個來上課的學生看到笑容滿面、面容慈祥的羅阿公，都開心的和他打招呼，甚至有小朋友還會和他來個擊掌。

“感覺他很辛苦。因為他幾乎每天都會在馬路那邊指揮。”
羅美瑜過去是做貿易商，退休後，就到國小做交通志工，至今已經20多年，他也透露自己的長壽秘訣，除了多運動，還有孩子們的笑容加持。

“動力就是我發現，小朋友的笑容，跟那個校長、家長會長的那個愛護的精神，我很感動。（長壽的秘訣）就是開朗、沒有煩惱，還有每天來小朋友給我的笑容，我是很高興，很愉快。”
校長和家長們，都對堅守岡位的羅阿公，讚不絕口，因為他除了負責學生上下課安全以外，對學校任何事務也都十分認真。

“高齡百歲之後還能夠為我們學校付出，我覺得是學校一個很大的福氣。”

“我覺得很謝謝這些志工們，還有羅爺爺的付出，然後因為他們每天這樣子守護小朋友上下學的交通安全，讓我們覺得都很放心；希望我可以活到那時候，然後也跟他一樣看齊。”
羅阿公說，未來無論下雨天、還是大太陽，都會風雨無阻，繼續在學校門口，付出愛心，守護孩子們的交通安全。
