Winners revealed for inaugural Chi Po-lin photo competition

Chi Po-lin has dedicated 25 years to aerial photography and captured magnificent photos and videos of Taiwan’s geography, landforms, and ecological environment. In 2017, Chi passed away in a helicopter crash while location scouting. To commemorate the acclaimed director and discover new talent, the Chi Po-lin Foundation held its very first aerial photography competition in August 2024. The winners were announced on Dec. 27, which would’ve been Chi’s 60th birthday. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in for a look!

In places like Mailiao in Yunlin, the air has a sour, agricultural and chemical smell. In the 21st century, in addition to protecting against sea breeze, I think windbreaks should also help places with human settlements and chemical production sites.

Chi Po-lin was a Taiwanese documentary filmmaker, photographer and environmentalist, best known for his film “Beyond Beauty Taiwan from Above.” The film won Best Documentary at the 2013 Golden Horse Awards. In his documentary, he shot stunning aerial footage of Taiwan while also raising awareness of the destruction of local ecosystems. Chi passed away in 2017 in a helicopter crash while he was taking aerial footage above Hualien for the sequel to his film. The Chi Po-lin Foundation was established in 2018 to carry on with Chi’s vision. The inaugural photography competition attracted 3,863 submissions. Chi’s son Chi Ting-huan said he hopes the competition can continue his father’s legacy and help find the next Chi Po-lin.

We really hope that we can continue recording the land. My father had a habit of re-shooting places he had already photographed. We hope that this doesn’t end in 2017. Everyone can participate in recording the environment and preserve our impression of Taiwan’s landscape.

Chi Po-lin has dedicated the last 25 years of his life to aerial photography and captured magnificent photos and videos of Taiwan’s geography, landforms and ecological environment. Following the awards ceremony for the competition, all winning works as well as Chi’s are on display at the Chi Po Lin Museum until Jan. 24. The foundation plans to hold more photography competitions in 2025.

首屆「齊柏林飛閱台灣攝影獎」25件作品獲獎

已故導演齊柏林致力於航空攝影25年，拍攝許多台灣地理、地形、生態環境的精彩照片和影片。2017年，他在外景勘察時因直升機墜毀身亡。為了紀念齊柏林，看見．齊柏林基金會舉辦首屆「齊柏林飛閱台灣攝影獎」頒獎典禮，計有25件獲獎作品。

看見．齊柏林基金會12月27日舉辦首屆「齊柏林飛閱台灣攝影獎」頒獎典禮，當天是已故齊柏林導演的60歲生日。首獎得主劉子正以「雲林台西海埔新生地」脫穎而出。

“雲林的地方，像是麥寮，空氣有一股酸酸及農業跟化學的味道。防風林在現在21世紀的現在，除了在抵禦海風之外，我覺得也要幫人類居住的地方跟化學生產的場域做一個阻隔。”

齊柏林是紀錄片製片人、攝影師，也投入環保運動，最知名電影是《看見台灣》，榮獲2013年金馬獎最佳紀錄片獎。在他的紀錄片中，他拍攝了令人驚嘆的台灣空拍鏡頭，同時也讓大眾更了解生態系統遭到破壞。2017年6月10日，齊柏林搭乘凌天航空空拍直升機，在拍攝代表作《看見台灣》續集《看見台灣II》的空中勘景途中，於花蓮縣豐濱鄉長虹橋附近山區墜機殉難。看見齊柏林基金會於2018年成立，以延續齊柏林的願景。首屆攝影比賽吸引了 3，863 件參賽作品。齊柏林的兒子齊廷洹希望這場比賽能延續父親的遺志，幫助尋找下一個齊柏林。

“我們很希望說能夠延續這一份對土地的紀錄，加上過去爸爸有個拍攝習慣，他會把他拍過的地方每年重複拍攝。我們希望這個東西不要在2017年就中斷，大家能夠一起參與對於環境的記錄，台灣土地的影像的保存。”

齊柏林導演從空中記錄台灣25年，拍攝了台灣地理、地形、生態環境的壯麗照片和影片。所有獲獎作品以及齊柏林的作品將在齊柏林空間展出至1月24日。基金會也打算在今年辦更多攝影比賽。

Foreign minister slams PLA stunt, confirms delegation makeup

On Thursday morning, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung reported at the Legislative Yuan. This is a standard united front effort. It’s also psychological warfare, a pretense made with video editing. The truth is the People’s Liberation Army is rattling their sabers at Taiwan. In the video, there are also footages of cross-strait exchanges. It’s psychological warfare.

Meanwhile, also on Thursday morning, Lin confirmed that the delegation of lawmakers led by Speaker Han Kuo-yu to attend US President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony on Jan. 20 will now have two more members. That makes eight in total.

Later on the ruling and opposition caucuses wanted more spots, so they were added. Based on the structure of the Legislative Yuan USA Caucus, we added two more spots, so in total there will be eight members in the legislative delegation. Because time is running out, we hope there won’t be any more changes.

Now, the KMT co-chair of the Legislative Yuan USA Caucus will join the delegation, alongside the DPP co-chair. The inclusion of lawmakers across the political spectrum displays Taiwan’s unity to promote relations with the US.

TPP makes preparations to elect new party chair

Thursday was lawmaker Huang Kuo-chang’s first day as the acting chair of the Taiwan People’s Party, after Ko Wen-je officially resigned on Wednesday. The party is set to hold an internal election to pick a new head in coming weeks, potentially before Feb. 1. Whether Huang himself will run for election remains to be seen.

Several important decisions were made during our working meeting today. We will establish a judicial justice working group within the party central committee.

On his first day as acting chair of the TPP, Huang Kuo-chang announced the establishment of a new party working group. He declined to comment on whether he’s willing to run for election as party chair.

Ko Wen-je officially resigned as party chair on Wednesday during a central committee meeting. He bid goodbye to party officials, hugged colleagues currently in office and spoke with witnesses involved in his current legal battle, which raised concerns about collusion.

Yesterday’s meeting was fully recorded, both sound and video. It did not in any way touch upon the judicial procedures currently underway.

“Low-key” is not a word you’ll find in Ko Wen-je’s vocabulary. Everyone at his resignation is a witness in the case. Of course the general public is going to be suspicious.

The TPP reports that its official website received a large volume of applications form supporters wanting to join the party, saying that as many as 3,000 people sent in applications during Ko’s last afternoon as chair. Skeptics say the influx of people could be a plot to influence the upcoming election for chair.

We’ll see what happens. Perhaps they say they want to do the vote in February, but they only start making arrangements in March, and so the vote only really takes place in April. It’s very possible.

The party is set to hold a vote to elect a new chair, but the complexity of the endeavor could make it difficult for the matter to be settled before the proposed date of Feb. 1.

100-year old man a happy volunteer

An 100-year-old man in Hsinchu is still going strong as a traffic volunteer. Lo Mei-yu has been helping directing traffic for primary schoolkids for over 20 years now. He said the smile on children’s faces is the secret to health and happiness at his age. Let’s see just how happy he is.

It’s 7 a.m., and he’s already on duty. Donning a reflective vest and a flag in hand, he readily starts the day’s work. With his upbeat energy, it’s hard to tell that this traffic volunteer has already turned 100 years old this year.

Lo Mei-yu is affectionately known as “Grandpa Lo.” The primary schoolkids are obviously very fond of him. They’d even high-five him while crossing the street.

He seems to work hard, because he’s over there on the road, almost every day, directing traffic.

Lo previously worked in international trade. He’s been a traffic volunteer at a primary school since retiring more than 20 years ago. He said the secret to living well into old age, apart from regular exercise, is the smile on children’s faces.

I discovered that my motivation is the smile on children’s faces, and the principal’s and parents’ association’s care toward them. I’m really touched. The secret is staying joyful and having no worries, and the smiles I get from kids every day. I’m really happy, really delighted.

The steady presence of Grandpa Lo is highly praised by teachers and parents. The principal said Lo not only helps direct traffic, he’s very involved in all matters of the school.

Lo said whether under the scorching sun or the pouring rain, he’ll always be there at the school gate, so the kids can arrive safely.

Great Virtue Award applauds leaders who benefit society

A new award has just been launched, for exceptional leaders contributing to society across various fields. The Great Virtue Award will be given out once every two years, to leaders from all walks of life who contribute to society and benefit their native rural area. The first three recipients are esteemed notables from the fields of law, art and the sciences. But they have also contributed to their hometowns during their illustrious careers, setting an example for future leaders who don’t want to forget their roots.

The first national Great Virtue Awards ceremony was held at the Old House of WengChin-Chiang and Weng Ching-chu, a county-level historic site in Yizhu.

Three recipients of the award were selected from among 27 esteemed nominees from all over Taiwan: Weng Yueh-sheng, former head of the Judicial Yuan, Lin Hwai-min, celebrated founder of Cloud Gate Dance Theater, and Li Chia-wei, former director of the National Museum of Natural Science.

I’m very moved to receive this encouragement, and I will keep working hard.

The three prize-winners have made exceptional contributions to the fields of law, art and natural sciences, as well as giving back to their hometowns and donating their ancestral homes to the public.

The Great Virtue Award has been founded by the Chingshinger Culture and Art Foundation, the chair of which is Wong Chi-huey, former head of Academia Sinica. Its aim is to promote the classical notion, “with great virtue one can take charge of the world.”

Using his foundation in his hometown, he’s held these awards which have a special meaning. And the selection essentially sets the model.

The Great Virtue Award will be held every two years, and bring to light exceptional figures who are working perhaps in obscurity in rural areas, contributing their gifts. It aims to set an example for a virtuous cycle to benefit society across the generations.

Keelung Bus Station struggles as a palace for pigeons

Keelung Bus Station is notorious as a palace of pigeons. The transit hub has a lot of large roofs spaces which are open to the elements. Big flocks of birds like to roost in there, and drop their guano in the process. The ground around the station is so difficult to scrub clean that workers say it’s a never-ending job. Although officials have installed bird deterrents, they’re only semi-successful. Let’s head to Keelung to hear more.

Cooing fills the air as a flock of birds roosts under this roof. Nearby, a fenced lot has also attracted a flock of pigeons. They’re everywhere, and so is this stuff…

Pigeon droppings cover the ground at this transport hub. Keelung Bus Station is largely covered overhead, and has a lot of steel beams in its rooves. But since it opened, it’s attracted more than just humans. Hordes of pigeons and crested myna show up each morning and evening. Commuters have to watch overhead for incoming missiles.

There are lots of pigeon droppings on the ground. I try to avoid it, but it’s everywhere.

It’s hard to clean. On the third floor you have to kneel down and scrub it. If they go out each morning, they’ll be back each evening. You clean the morning lot and there’s another pile by the evening.

To try to combat the situation, the city’s Department of Transportation has installed 18 bird deterrent devices at the station.

We’ve seen a certain amount of success already, but there are still some sporadic flocks of birds gathering. We will look into how to add to the number of deterrent devices. We haven’t ruled out putting up nets to deal with it.

Apart from installing more deterrents, the city is also urging the public to never feed the birds. That could increase the problem. It has even threatened to levy a maximum fine of NT$6,000 on people who feed the pigeons. Best not to risk it.
