TPP protests penalties for misreporting political donations

2025-03-20

The Control Yuan has fined former Taiwan People’s Party Chair Ko Wen-je NT$3.74 million for falsely declaring political donations. It has also ordered the confiscation of NT$55.79 million in campaign funds. On Thursday, Huang Shan-shan, who had been Ko’s campaign director at the time, called foul play. She says the party had attempted to submit corrections to the political declarations, but was never granted permission to do so.

Huang Shan-shan directed choice words at the Control Yuan, arguing against the heavy penalties imposed on Ko Wen-je for falsely declaring political donations.

Then Ko Wen-je campaign director
The first time the declaration was made, some accountants filed inaccurate reports, making Ko Wen-je himself a victim in this issue. We requested the Control Yuan to let us submit corrections to Oct. 1, Jan. 14 and Feb. 5, but they have not yet agreed to it. We will seek the relevant remedies in accordance with the law.

Grace Woo
Political commentator
The report from the Control Yuan was a slap in the face for them. It’s not just a problem with Tuanmu Cheng, who was the accountant then. There are probably more accomplices involved in falsifying and inflating the reports.

Huang also questioned why current and former Presidents, Lai Ching-te and Tsai Ing-wen’s election campaign merch operations weren’t scrutinized the same way as Ko’s campaign.

Huang Shan-shan
Then-campaign director
There should be a nation-wide standard. What about Lai Ching-te and Tsai Ing-wen’s merch stores? It’s double standards if those weren’t also going to be investigated.

Justin Wu
DPP spokesperson
It’s now been half a year, and still they’re not giving any explanations. Now that the competent authority is penalizing them, they’re trying to let themselves off the hook, smearing other two presidential campaigns and trying to drag others down and shifting the focus. They’re being really irresponsible.

The DPP retorts that Ko’s team should not drag others down too, and that they should explain themselves as soon as possible.
