The Nvidia GTC conference recently kicked off in San Jose. Many attendees visited a local diner that played a significant role in Nvidia’s early days. Not only did Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang work there, but he held Nvidia’s founding meeting there over 30 years ago. A photo of the owner with Huang still hangs on the wall.

A restaurant with a classic American diner feel, this branch of the chain diner Denny’s in San Jose has a unique history. A picture of Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang hangs on the wall, and a framed dedication next to one booth marks it as the place where he started Nvidia.

We are at the restaurant Denny’s where Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang first discussed starting a business. Let’s try the meal that Jensen Huang says he misses the most, a turkey bacon tomato sandwich.

Back when this simple sandwich was Huang’s favorite meal, he began discussing Nvidia with two other entrepreneurs. With this year’s Nvidia GTC conference taking place in San Jose, many attendees are visiting this restaurant.

You know, I was incredibly shy, and it got me to be able to interact with people a lot better. We had to find a place quiet to talk and there was a Denny’s close by.

Huang’s time in the service industry taught him how to make deeper connections with people. Even here at a simple restaurant, ideas shared between friends can change the world.

近日輝達GTC大會，在美國聖荷西盛大展開，就有參加者特別跑到，當地的一家美式餐廳朝聖，因為這是輝達催生地，不僅黃仁勳在此地打工過、30幾年前，輝達執行長黃仁勳，就是在這家餐廳，開草創會議，實際走訪店內，牆上還掛著店家與黃仁勳的合照，帶您一起來看。

店內裝潢，充滿復古格調，抬頭看牆上合照裏頭，竟出現輝達執行長黃仁勳的身影，還有其中座位，旁邊還掛著寫著獻給輝達牌子，這裡是美國矽谷聖荷西的連鎖餐廳Denny’s，更是黃仁勳的創業基地。

樸實簡單料理，卻是當時黃仁勳最愛的美味，當年，黃仁勳和另外兩位創辦人，就是在這兒，萌生創立輝達的念頭，近期輝達GTC大會在美國聖荷西盛大展開，因此吸引不少人，來朝聖。

Shake hands with humanoid robot at Nvidia GTC

Nvidia is showcasing its latest technologies at the Nvidia GTC, dubbed the Super Bowl of AI. Some of the highlights include humanoid robots that can do household chores and interact with humans. There’s also supercomputers that weigh just 1.2kg and require no fanning to stay cool. Yet the cutest highlight is probably Blue, an adorable pint-sized robot that’s a joy to look at.

Neo’s hand grip feels just like shaking hands with a real human. He can also do high-fives, fist bumps and even chores. This is a humanoid robot developed by Nvidia currently on show at the GTC. It’s become a highlight of the show.

“Neo: Hi, I am Neo. Oh! There’s a leaf in my face, sorry. Let me step back.”

The robot can also clean the floors, picking up a vacuum and turning it on with the press of a button. It can fulfill all sorts of requests, and interact with humans with good humor.

Neo shakes its arms as if it were shy to show off its moves. But it really can’t dance well, and asked his minder to get him out of the awkward situation.

At his keynote speech the day before, CEO Jensen Huang interacted with Blue, an adorable robot buddy. Well, now there are two Blues on show at the venue. Attendees can come down to say hello and jiggle your heads together.

The robots look as if they’re taken straight out of a cartoon series. They can react to their environment and wiggle their butts as they interact with people. Blue is packed with high tech. Every joint on the robot is managed by AI, allowing it to walk and maintain its balance. Also on show at the venue is the DGX Spark, the world’s smallest AI supercomputer. Weighing in at just 1.2kg, it allows AI developers to work on models on a desktop set-up.

You don’t have to replace them anymore. So that’s great. Every time you replace anything, you take away from precious AI time, right? You’re trying to compute as much as possible.

The DGX GB300 is a high-performing fully liquid-cooled AI system. The liquid-cooling system replaces heat-dissipating fans, which prevents damage to components.

Taiwan supermarket opens ‘Squid Game’ center in Seoul

Korean films and dramas have captivated audiences around the world in recent years, inspiring many tourists to visit the country. One of Taiwan’s chain supermarkets recently partnered with the Korean Netflix series “Squid Game” to build a center in Seoul where visitors can participate in challenges from the series.

Most people are familiar with the Korean series “Squid Game.” But now there’s a real game room in South Korea. Come with me to experience it together.

Before starting the game, participants have to put on a bracelet and take a profile photo, just like in the series. Although the games and levels are very similar, the rules are different.

We are inside the world of “Squid Game” at the most familiar level: red light, green light. But what’s different here is that the staff is trying to get in your way.

There are individual and group competitions here. In the end, those with the highest scores have the chance to face off for the championship.

TPP protests penalties for misreporting political donations

The Control Yuan has fined former Taiwan People’s Party Chair Ko Wen-je NT$3.74 million for falsely declaring political donations. It has also ordered the confiscation of NT$55.79 million in campaign funds. On Thursday, Huang Shan-shan, who had been Ko’s campaign director at the time, called foul play. She says the party had attempted to submit corrections to the political declarations, but was never granted permission to do so.

Huang Shan-shan directed choice words at the Control Yuan, arguing against the heavy penalties imposed on Ko Wen-je for falsely declaring political donations.

The first time the declaration was made, some accountants filed inaccurate reports, making Ko Wen-je himself a victim in this issue. We requested the Control Yuan to let us submit corrections to Oct. 1, Jan. 14 and Feb. 5, but they have not yet agreed to it. We will seek the relevant remedies in accordance with the law.

The report from the Control Yuan was a slap in the face for them. It’s not just a problem with Tuanmu Cheng, who was the accountant then. There are probably more accomplices involved in falsifying and inflating the reports.

Taipei’s newest shopping mall opens next in Nangang

What are your plans for the upcoming weekend? If you’re in Taipei, there’s a new hangout spot in town. Enter the Mitsui Shopping Park LaLaport Nangang, a massive shopping mall right at the doorsteps of the Taipei MRT that offers plenty of exclusives in Taiwan. Let’s go!

Mitsui Shopping Park LaLaport Nangang was inaugurated on Thursday in Taipei after nine years in the works. The developer, Mitsui Fudosan’s top managers, Taipei mayor Chiang Wan-an and local partners attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

We may all be concerned with the impact on traffic. The Taipei City Government had already established a working group at the municipal level.

And it officially opened to the public, at 12:30 in the afternoon.

The hottest brands from Japan and South Korea can all be found here. But since it’s only the first day, 40% of the stores still have plastic covers on their furniture. All in all, 273 among the 300-plus stores opened during the mall’s inauguration. The food court also boasts many exclusive brands that can’t be found anywhere else in Taiwan. It also houses Japanese hypermarket LOPIA and the very first KidZania in Taiwan.

Another highlight of the mall is Taiwan’s very first Harry Potter Shop. You can see that I’ve already changed into robes to experience life at Hogwarts.

Platform Nine-and Three-Quarters, the Nimbus 2000, and Dobby with socks. Every corner of the store is sure to delight Potterheads.

The massiveness can truly be appreciated outside, with six stories above ground and three below on an area of 47,000 pings. The mall is also connected with Nangang Exhibition Center and CTBC Financial Park on an overhead pedestrian bridge; as well as four train systems to draw in the crowds. It’s also expected to drive foot traffic to nearby shopping centers, by 10% at Global Mall Nangang Station Store, and by 5% to 10% at Citylink, making Nangang a new shopping paradise.

Taichung police dog first trained in both drug detection, rescue

A dog from Taichung recently became Taiwan’s most accomplished police pup. Trained to sniff out drugs, the police dog Uhoo once cracked a major nightclub drug case. Over the last two years, Uhoo’s handler has dedicated extra time to search-and-rescue training. Uhoo recently passed the intermediate search-and-rescue dog certification, making her Taiwan’s first police dog trained in both drug detection and search-and-rescue.

At her handler’s command, this golden Labrador jumps into the car and starts searching.

The dog’s attention focuses on the door, indicating she has detected the smell of drugs there.

At only three years old, Uhoo has served on the Taichung police canine team for two years. She is trained not only to find drugs, but to locate trapped people as well.

Uhoo walks around the rubble, investigating the scene with her nose. She barks loudly when she finds a human scent, showing her training as a search-and-rescue dog.

Domestic police dogs don’t actually have a certification system. They need to take IRO international assessments held by the fire department to obtain a professional working dog certification. Search-and-rescue training improves the dog’s physical performance, which, in turn, gives them more endurance to perform their primary drug detection duties.

With her especially talented nose, Uhoo successfully obtained the intermediate search-and-rescue certification, making her the first dog in Taiwan that can perform both search-and-rescue and drug detection.

For drug detection, the signal is to sit down and stare at the drugs. For search-and-rescue, the dog needs to bark to indicate it has found someone. At first, when she was learning something new, she might suddenly seem confused and unsure of what to do. But I think she is naturally talented.

After two years of training, the talented Uhoo is the first dog in Taiwan that can serve on both the police force and firefighting team.

Actress aiming for combined 80kg at Masters Games weightlifting

The “fitness goddess” Jane Chen has signed up for weightlifting at the World Masters Games in Taipei and New Taipei. Lately she’s been using breaks from filming to get back into training. She says a lot has changed in the four years since she last competed. This time she found a coach to help prepare her. Apart from facing off against athletes from around the world, she also hopes to challenge herself. She even proclaimed that she hopes to do a combined 80kg snatch and clean and jerk.

Lifting fluidly all in one go, these practiced movements are no worse than a professional weightlifter.

She’s got no problem with either the snatch or the clean and jerk.

After four years away, Jane Chen is getting back into competitive weightlifting for the World Masters Games in Taipei and New Taipei. She found a coach and has set aside three days a week for a grueling training regimen.

Watching the 2020 Olympics, everyone went wild for Kuo Hsing-chun郭婞淳. I thought it would be interesting to try the sport, as well as meaningful to do it at the same time as the Olympics. Now with the World Masters Games, it’s the same. I’ve never participated in an international competition before, and I’m not an athlete, so I really want to try it out. And this time it’s in Taiwan, so it’s a rare opportunity.

She said she wants to square off against the best from around the world. Even though after every session her hands are scraped to the point of bleeding and she has bruises on her knees, her passion sustains her.

I think with weightlifting or any sport you’re learning, the significance comes in accepting your own failures. When I fail, I can stand back up and keep going. At the Games, I hope to lift 35kg and see if I can snatch 45kg. When I say it, it sounds ridiculous, but that’s my goal. Together I hope to do 80kg.

Every new wound is a mark of honor and a test of her resolve. To make up for her shortcomings, she’s also especially training her lower body muscles, aiming to become a weightlifting star among stars!
