100s left stranded at theme park after free admission promotion

2025-04-04

An offer for free admission to a theme park has proven to be too popular for its own good. The Leofoo Village Theme Park has a promotional event giving free tickets to anyone under 18 this long weekend, which resulted in the park getting packed with teens. But once it closed, hundreds of people were left scrambling for a spot on a bus back to the city, and many of them didn’t make it onboard. Let’s hear more.

At about 7, I was taking passengers from the park back to the hotel, but on the way there were lots of people on the side of the road. There were maybe hundreds of people standing around at different spots. On the taxi service platform, we kept getting requests from Leofoo Village Theme Park. People were calling over and over again, because there weren’t enough drivers to take them.

We have spoken with bus companies, taxi companies and our own shuttle busses. In principle, they will all offer more services than yesterday at closing time. We may also start announcing the closure and to get people out earlier so that not everyone leaves the park at the same time.

Footage of the commotion shows a huge crowd of people trying to board a bus, which only opened its front door to prevent a crowd crush. People push and pull and screams can be heard as everyone tries to get on. Some people reportedly waited for two hours and ultimately decided to walk back home. Leofoo Village Theme Park says transport operators have added extra services, and the park has extended its opening time by one hour. Whether the next few days will be less chaotic remains to be seen.
