Scooter crash in New Taipei injures 3

A speeding scooter crashed into a washing business in New Taipei’s Shulin District on Wednesday evening. Apparently, the scooter’s accelerator had gotten stuck, preventing the driver from slowing down. Three people were left injured, and three scooters damaged. The driver will have to pay for their medical expenses and for the damages, on top of a NT$18,000 fine for driving without a license plate.

People washing their scooters and chatting leap out of the way when they see he’s coming straight at them. But it is too late. Though this man jumped out just in time, the woman beside him was struck, taking them both down.

After crashing into the crowd, the scooter keeps moving forward. After ramming itself against several other scooters, its driver ends up flat on the ground. The operator couldn’t believe his eyes.

I heard the sound of the engine accelerating and rushing by. It hit a woman on the legs and she fell on the floor. Then it crashed, hit the fourth cubicle and he ended up on the ground. He was hurt in the chest. I called police over immediately.

It is thought the scooter’s accelerator got stuck, resulting in him crashing into the business. Police also determined that the rider had been driving a scooter without a license plate and have issued him a fine of NT$18,000. In addition, he’ll have to shell out for the victims’ medical expenses and damages to the scooters and the business.

壓車耍帥騎進洗車場騎士失控往人群暴衝釀3傷

新北樹林一家洗車場，2號晚間發生車禍。當時陳姓騎士要騎去洗車，過程卻加速壓車，絲毫沒有減速，居然就這樣朝洗車人群撞過去，一共造成3車3人受了傷，洗車設備也被撞壞，警方到場發現，他疑似沒掛車牌就上路，後續除了賠償損失，恐怕也會吃上罰單。

黑衣男子過彎一個壓車，絲毫沒有減速，騎進洗車場內，接著隨即出意外。

大批洗車民眾邊洗車邊聊天，發現機車朝自己撞過來，要逃早已來不及，即便男子反應快跳開，但旁邊女子還是慘遭撞上，兩人倒地不起。

機車暴衝撞倒人後，又一路往前滑，撞倒好幾輛機車，駕駛更一度躺在地上無法起立，業者看到誇張畫面也傻了眼。

“我聽到就是催油門的聲音，然後一路暴衝，撞到一個女生的腳，然後那個女生馬上就撞在地板上，坐下去這樣子。他就又撞到我們第四格，整個人就倒下，他就是有撞到胸口啦，我就馬上報警。”

原來這名騎士可能因為油門卡住，導致整輛車衝進洗車場內，而且疑似沒掛車牌就上路，警方後續調閱監視器，確認騎士無牌上路，也將開罰1萬8千元罰鍰，還有醫藥費及洗車場賠償等著他。

Cooking school creates bilingual textbooks about making Taiwanese delicacies

Want to learn how to cook Taiwanese cuisine? An award-winning cooking school in Taipei teaches people how to make local delicacies from scratch in both Mandarin Chinese and English. In the latest, the school has now created a YouTube channel, a bilingual textbook, and free online PDFs for teachers and students. FTV reporter Stephany Yang whets our taste buds as she talks to the school’s founder, Chelsea Tsai.

The cooking school offers classes on how to make classic Taiwanese dishes like braised pork rice, gua bao, beef noodle soup, pearl milk tea and xiaolongbao from scratch. Founded in 2018, the school has welcomed students from over 46 countries and has won accolades like the TripAdvisor Traveler’s Choice Award. Chelsea Tsai, the founder of the school, hopes to educate people about how delicious Taiwanese food is, along with the stories behind each dish

Luroufan is a very classic Taiwanese street food. It has three basic elements of Taiwan cooking. First of all, we have pork. We have rice and we have soy sauce. They are the three key elements of Taiwanese cuisine, which is why it is so representative of Taiwan. The pork belly has the perfect balance between fat and meat. Once we braise it for at least 30 minutes, you can have a very nice texture and also a very nice flavor. We cook it with soy sauce.

The cooking school has unveiled new projects, including a bilingual textbook for teachers, cooking classes for bilingual teachers, a free online PDF and a YouTube channel with videos teaching people how to make Taiwanese delicacies.

I think we can empower more people to be food ambassadors or storytellers of Taiwanese cuisines so this year we developed a teaching material called Cooking Stars Taiwan. We try to collaborate with all the home economics teachers in junior high school and high school. We try to teach the students how to cook Taiwanese cuisine and also in a fun and easy way. And, also, how to explain it and how to say it, about the stories behind it. It is a bilingual teaching material. We have the key vocabulary and even all the recipes are bilingual. We also have videos for them to follow.

Tsai hopes to empower more people to share Taiwanese food culture to the world and encourages everyone to be a food ambassador.

Tourist attractions packed on second day of long weekend

Tourist attractions across the nation were packed on the second day of the Qingming Festival long weekend. The National Center for Traditional Arts held obstacle courses and colorful performances and other activities that drew more than 7,000 to its park in Yilan. In addition, Yehliu Geopark in New Taipei City celebrated Children’s Day by giving kids under 12 free admission and also set up many other games, bringing together children of all ages.

On the side are folk music and dance performances, while children jump up on the stage, jump on wooden boards and experience the fun of tap dancing.

There are many activities relating to traditional arts in Yilan, and the performances are also very exciting. They are packed every day and I have to wait in line for a long time.

In addition, for Children’s Day falling on April 4, the Yehliu Geopark in New Taipei City did not only give free admission to children under 12 years old, but also designed obstacle courses in the park relating to animals and plants so that children could learn about the geopark’s natural ecology.

The children were not afraid of the hot sunshine. They wore sun hats and sunglasses, sat in front of the tour guides, and held colorful balloons in their hands.

There are about 400 species of plants here, and 80% of them are native species. So this Children’s Day, we took plants as the theme and planned some activities. Many parents brought their children so they could share the experience together, make learning fun and have a happy Children’s Day together.

During the long weekend, there were large crowds of people at tourist attractions across the country. Coupled with the rare good weather, many families brought their children along and relaxed.

Only seniors serve customers at Taiwan’s ‘oldest’ cafe

The coffee shop with the oldest staff in all of Taiwan is in the Yuanfu community of Kaohsiung’s Qishan District. The baristas are all seniors who learned how to make coffee from classes taught in their community. One of them is the original owner, still serving customers at almost 90 years old. They don’t let age have the last word, instead honing a new skill to bring color to their retirement.

A barista tilts fresh grounds into a filter, then gently pours hot water over it in circles. The enticing smell of coffee immediately hits the nostrils.

On closer look, it turns out that these baristas are all seniors. Located in the Yuanfu community of Kaohsiung’s Qishan District, this is Taiwan’s “oldest” café, with the baristas’ average age at around 80.

I’ve found that they forget their age. This cafe gets a lot of customers. The seniors here—actually many older people are afraid of being lonely. When they come here, a lot of people find it lively and it makes them happy.

Most of these seniors had other jobs before, but are exploring a career change in their golden years. By making coffee and interacting with customers, they can keep living life to the fullest.

Older adults revel in the joy of trying the claw machine

An older people’s association in Chiayi has found an unusual activity to brighten up its clients’ lives. Claw machines! The residents of an older people’s housing development got a row of claw machines installed at their home. Many have never given the machines a try before, although they’re a part of childhood for many kids nowadays. The machines stimulate mental and physical health, creating chances for a fun excursion outside the house. And there’s always the possibility that you’ll go home with a prize!

These are residents of a housing development run by a welfare organisation for older adults in Chiayi. As they enjoy the machines, they’re getting the hang of how to control the claw.

The local “golden years” group has found that having a go with the claw machine stretches its clients’ brains and improves their physical mobility, so it installed these machines free of charge.

If you want to try the claw, firstly you have to be standing up, secondly you need to be watching the changes in the situation, and following that with your hand. So that means you need to be making full use of your hands and your brain. And that’s a great game.

Enjoying the claw machines brings these older adults a lot of joy and a sense of challenge and achievement. The association hopes the idea will spread to similar groups all over the country.

Trump tariff could cause US exports to drop 63%, GDP to shrink by 3.8%

Taiwan’s exports to the US could drop by 63% and Taiwan’s GDP growth could shrink by 3.8% under US President Donald Trump’s new tariff regime, according to an economist interviewed by Bloomberg. The Executive Yuan says the tariffs are unfair and will impact all kinds of local industries, ranging from cars to computers to machine tools to shoemaking. It argues that Trump’s move is unreasonable, saying Trump’s calculation methods are unclear and that Taiwan has made enormous contributions to the US economy and national security. It is going to lodge a solemn representation with Washington.

Following US President Donald Trump’s announcement that he would immediately impose a 32% tariff on Taiwanese exports minus semiconductors, the Executive Yuan gathered its ministries for an emergency response meeting.

Officials said the new tariff rate did not reflect the actual state of economic and trade relations between Taiwan and the US and it was unfair to Taiwan. They pointed out three issues they thought were unreasonable. One was the US may have calculated the tariff rates based on a nation’s close trade relationship with China with considerations that these kinds of nations might try to conceal the Chinese origins of their exports. But Taiwan had long ago taken measures against this and made proactive investigations.

It’s possible that countries which have tried to launder exports originally made in China have seen high tariffs. One way is showing that our data relating to imports from China and data relating to exports to the US have not undergone any obvious changes. After the US-China trade war broke out, Taiwanese business people from traditional industries moved on a large scale to Southeast Asia to set up factories.

Among the nations slapped with heavy tariffs from Trump are Vietnam at 46%, Cambodia at 49% and Thailand at 36%. All these nations are important bases for Taiwanese business people.

There are only two countries in the world that make servers, excluding China. One is Taiwan and the other is the US. The US accounts for 0.9% of the world’s market share, which means 98% are made in Taiwan or Mexico. Although many of these products are subject to high tariffs, they are irreplaceable.

When Trump first took tariff action, the car and computer industries were the first to be hit, with their output values expected to fall by NT$60 billion and NT$138.5 billion respectively. Traditional industries such as machine tools and shoemakers will also be hit hard.
