
Paraguay has long resisted Chinese pressure to become the only country in South America that maintains diplomatic ties with Taiwan. To celebrate its Independence Day on May 14, the embassy has teamed up with a Taipei restaurant to throw a two-month-long food festival. Ambassador Carlos José Fleitas Rodríguez personally attended an event to promote the dishes, hoping that Taiwanese can enjoy a taste of his home.

We’re starting with food, Paraguayan barbeque. It uses beef from Paraguay and chipa guasu, which is made from corn and baked with cheese.
From beef to fried fish, the Paraguayan embassy worked with a Taipei restaurant to put on a two-month-long festival of Paraguayan food, hoping to share some local favorites with people in Taiwan.

May is Paraguay’s month of independence. Thanks to our cooperation with this restaurant, they’re offering more Paraguayan dishes to share with our friends in Taiwan.

Central and Southern American food is different from Taiwanese food. In Taiwan we use rice, oil, salt, soy sauce, and vinegar. But in Paraguay, it’s all about highlighting the spices. Beef is the main staple food in Paraguay. So for our menu, we especially added charcoal-grilled short ribs. It comes in a huge platter suitable for sharing.
Taiwan and Paraguay have enjoyed diplomatic relations for 68 years and maintain a close relationship. The South American nation has long resisted Chinese pressure to support Taiwan. Now by sharing their cuisine as well, people in Taiwan can enjoy a taste of Paraguay right here at home.

“中南美洲的香料,跟台灣絕對是不一樣,台灣就是柴米油鹽醬醋,那在巴拉圭的話,還是主要以香料的表現為主,巴拉圭的人民主食就是牛肉,所以我們這次,在我們的菜色裡面,我們特別添加了一個,就是我們的巴拉圭炭烤牛小排,它是大盎司的,可以適合多人分享”
