Popular Taipei noodle restaurant announces September closure

People who frequent Taipei Main Station will soon have one fewer restaurant to enjoy. A famous Japanese-style yakisoba restaurant announced it is to close in September. Many office workers and students were heartbroken when the news broke. Touched, the owners explained that they’re about to embark on a new stage of life, and have no choice but to close down.

Inside a soft bun are piping hot noodles, paired with sliced ginger and enticing with kimchi on the side. With their special sauce, crisp kimchi, and bottles of strawberry milk, regulars love this restaurant. It’s located near Taipei Main Station and has been around for eight years. But the owners suddenly announced that they’re going to close in September.

This Japanese-style fried noodle restaurant is hidden in the small alleys south of Taipei Main. If you’re not looking closely, you might miss it. But that hasn’t harmed their popularity.

Yeah, they often have a line in that alley there. It’s because there are a lot of cram schools around here.

Delivery drivers say that every time they pass by, the line is snaking down the street. The couple who run it posted a notice thanking their customers for their support, which has made it possible to stay in business until now. But they plan to close on Sept. 15 as they embark on a different path, and hope to meet everyone again soon.

I’ve eaten there a few times. Their sauce is fresh and the strawberry milk is delicious. It’s a shame.

Customers will be sorry to see them go after giving the restaurant a 4.4-star rating after nearly 1,000 reviews. But for this area of Taipei, which used to see over 100,000 exam resitters in a year, but now sees fewer than 2,500, it’s only natural that the restaurant scene will change along with it.

軟綿麵包中，夾著熱騰騰炒麵，搭配薑絲，一旁泡菜日式炒麵也相當吸睛，獨門醬汁和爽口泡菜是不少民眾的愛，老饕也愛這罐草莓牛奶，台北車站知名日式炒麵麵包店，營業八年，夫妻檔老闆娘無預警宣布今年9月就要歇業。

The US House of Representatives has passed two pro-Taiwan bills with bipartisan support. One of them aims to strengthen the Taipei Act of 2019, rejecting China’s distortion of Resolution 2758 and backing Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. This amendment makes clear that the United States as a participant in any international organization must actively oppose attempts by the CCP to destroy the policies, the procedures, or the language of those institutions in order to manipulate Taiwan’s status.

The Taiwan International Solidarity Act aims to strengthen the Taipei Act of 2019. It includes a provision stating that the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 only addressed the issue of China’s representation in the UN, and did not make a statement on Taiwan or its peoples’ representation in the international body or any related organizations. The bill also rejects China’s twisting of the resolution to undermine Taiwan’s international position, and affirms that the US will harness its influence to support Taiwan.

Also, the relevant US agencies are required to report on the CCP’s tactics to pressure Taiwan.

Taiwan is not just a friend. Taiwan is a self-governing democracy, a critical economic partner and a responsible global stakeholder. It deserves to be seen and heard and not erased and silenced.

The amendment was sponsored by Republican Representative Brian Mast, and co-sponsored by Democrat John Olszewski, who said the US would not stand idle during a previous visit to Taiwan.

Just last month, the PRC conducted large-scale drills in the waters and airspace around Taiwan. It is critical that the United States shows unwavering support for our friend, Taiwan.

Another pro-Taiwan bill that has garnered bipartisan support is the Taiwan Assurance Implementation Act, which aims to reinforce the Taiwan Assurance Act of 2020. It requires the Department of State to regularly report to Congress on US-Taiwan engagement. It also requires the US government to develop a plan to lift all remaining self-imposed restrictions.

‘Battlefield vibes’ ruined house selling for bargain NT$6 million

If you’re looking to buy real estate in Northern Taiwan, this one might be for you. A plot of land for sale in Taoyuan has caused a stir online, for its peculiar characteristics. The land itself is going for a bargain price of NT$6 million, and if you buy, you get a crumbling building on the property for free. With cracked ceilings, exposed rebars, and no windows or doors, the unit’s selling point is its “battlefield vibes” and low price.

The walls are in terrible shape, the plaster peeling off to expose the concrete. The windows don’t have frames, and there are no doors to be seen. Steel bars peek out from the ceiling. This property could be yours for a bargain price.

The 113 m2 ruin is located in Luzhu, Taoyuan, and is advertised as a bargain. Buy the land and get the decrepit house for free! At NT$5.98 million the property boasts a “battlefield vibe” that has left few netizens unstirred. Some say that, at its low price, the owner is essentially paying the buyers to take it. Others say they venue is perfect for paintball. But others say the nearly NT$6 million asking price is not worth it.

The corner unit is close to Taoyuan International Airport and Taoyuan Aerotropolis, and is just a stone’s throw away from the MRT and major thoroughfares. It could be ideal for commuters or for outdoorsy types. But is there a catch?

Of course it’s too expensive. That house for NT$5 million? You have to demolish it and start from scratch.

Locals say it’s not worth it, and some netizens agree. You have to tear the whole ruin down and start over with a new foundation, walls and floors. Add the cost of clearing debris, and you’d have to spend at least NT$1 to NT$1.5 million more in making the space livable. Despite everything, several potential buyers have shown interest in the deal.

Awards ceremony celebrates outstanding children’s books

Winners of the 37th Hsin-yi Children’s Literature Awards have been announced, commending outstanding works among 305 entries. One first-time entrant was recognized for his book about trains, while another author, who has submitted entries for 10 years, won for his book that uses aliens to humorously present linguistic and cultural differences.

Although this is 23-year-old Wang Chao-chun’s first picture book, he impressed the judges at the 37th Hsin-yi Children’s Literature Awards, receiving an award over other established authors.

Snoopy in the sky at Penghu fireworks festival

The 2025 Penghu International Fireworks Festival opened on Monday with a 12-minute fireworks display and a drone light show featuring characters from the iconic US comic strip Peanuts. A total of 29 fireworks shows are on view throughout the festival. That’s two nights a week in May and June, and once weekly in July. The finale will be on July 29.

One Peanuts scene after another in mere seconds. This is the opening of the 2025 Penghu International Fireworks Festival.

Snoopy, Charlie Brown and friends appear, thanks to the 700 drones deployed. There’s also a 12-minute fireworks show featuring 100 types of fireworks. It’s truly a visual feast.

The show could’ve been perfect, if not for the scattered lights near the climax, which should’ve formed more Peanuts scenes framed by fireworks. Turns out there was a disruption to the drones’ connectivity.

The tie-in with Peanuts comes as the comic strip celebrates its 75th anniversary. A total of 29 shows are slated for the coming three months, five of which will be executed by international teams. It’ll sure be a dazzling summer in Penghu filled with nostalgia.

Taipei restaurant offering Paraguayan favorites to celebrate Independence Day

Paraguay has long resisted Chinese pressure to become the only country in South America that maintains diplomatic ties with Taiwan. To celebrate its Independence Day on May 14, the embassy has teamed up with a Taipei restaurant to throw a two-month-long food festival. Ambassador Carlos José Fleitas Rodríguez personally attended an event to promote the dishes, hoping that Taiwanese can enjoy a taste of his home.

Onions, tomato, and spices are stewed together. Just add an egg and this traditional Paraguayan stewed beef dish is done. But this next one is the most classic...

We’re starting with food, Paraguayan barbeque. It uses beef from Paraguay and chipa guasu, which is made from corn and baked with cheese.

From beef to fried fish, the Paraguayan embassy worked with a Taipei restaurant to put on a two-month-long festival of Paraguayan food, hoping to share some local favorites with people in Taiwan.

Central and Southern American food is different from Taiwanese food. In Taiwan we use rice, oil, salt, soy sauce, and vinegar. But in Paraguay, it’s all about highlighting the spices. Beef is the main staple food in Paraguay. So for our menu, we especially added charcoal-grilled short ribs. It comes in a huge platter suitable for sharing.

Taiwan and Paraguay have enjoyed diplomatic relations for 68 years and maintain a close relationship. The South American nation has long resisted Chinese pressure to support Taiwan. Now by sharing their cuisine as well, people in Taiwan can enjoy a taste of Paraguay right here at home.
