Lawmaker talks Iceland Northern Lights and military police food delivery

Are national security officers using government money to see the Northern Lights in Iceland? That’s what KMT Lawmaker Weng Hsiao-ling seems to think, after a series of comments she made on the matter on Thursday. She took issue with the fact that security staffers were not filling in reports with the destinations and the people they were meeting with while on assignment. In a separate issue, she said the military police at the Presidential Office should get delivery for their meals. That’s because the cooks may not be able to receive payment on time in another two weeks, due to a KMT-backed budget freeze.

Internet users have slammed Weng online, saying that perhaps she was trying to help China get more information on Taiwan. But that wasn’t the only thing that caused an outrage. It was also her response to learning that the chefs at the Presidential Office may not be able to receive payment on time in another two weeks, due to the KMT-passed budget freezes.

國民黨立委翁曉玲又有驚人之語，前一天司法委員會處理總統府、國安會預算解凍，她質疑國安會專案報告不把人員去哪、見誰寫出來，還質疑"這樣外界怎知道你們不是去冰島看極光" ? 另外總統府廚師月薪凍結，擔心憲兵伙食問題，她竟說可叫外送、買麥當勞，讓外界看傻眼。

國民黨立委翁曉玲，在司法法制委員會，質詢國安會副秘書長徐斯儉，質問交來的"專案報告"內容不詳盡，還要國安會把人去哪、見誰，大庭廣眾下，講出來。

Already, real-estate agents are trying to attract buyers by saying you could “be neighbors with Jensen Huang.” Nvidia’s presence is sure to bring employment and business opportunities. But how much will it boost a depressed property market? Let’s see what the experts have to say.

Sounds of construction ring out a steel frame in Taipei’s Beitou-Shilin Technology Park. A dozen unfinished apartment buildings and heavy machinery are scattered among newly built homes.

Next to this school, there are even more new construction projects. Now, Nvidia has announced plans to set up a campus in Shilin and Beitou, injecting new excitement into the property market.

Nvidia’s Taiwan headquarters will be in the Beitou-Shilin park. Was it the favored location? The jury’s still out on Shin Kong Life Insurance’s T17 and T18 lots. But the news has already ignited the housing market.

The AI wave has inspired the creation of a tech corridor, with 37 construction companies—including Farglory, Chonghong, and Huaku—basically winning the lottery.

Fast-acting real-estate agents are also jumping on the chance to advertise by saying you could be Jensen Huang’s neighbor or in on the ground floor. But looking at the past three years of presales in the technology park, each ping is selling for only NT$1.06 to NT$1.14 million. Compared with 17.3% annual increases in Nangang and 10.7% increases in Neihu, it’s a 1.2% drop in price. How much momentum will Nvidia really generate?

The property market is undergoing an adjustment. So in the short term, the properties being marketed now in the Beitou-Shilin park will sell well. The ones from before are actually facing a very low sales rate at 30% or even under 30%. After the Nvidia effect, presales should have a chance to rise above 50%.

Experts are conservative about short-term trends. But if the Yellow MRT line is completed and connects Shezidao for development, the spillover effect is expected to extend to Shezidao, Tamsui, Zhuwei, Sanchong, and Luzhou, giving a positive outlook in the long term.

Chiayi fish farm transformed into cafe loved by famous artist

There’s a cafe in Chiayi’s Minxiong Township that’s built on top of a fish farm. The owner used to raise and sell goldfish and fish for eating, but after a downturn in the industry and because his wife loves coffee, he decided to turn it into a cafe. There are aquariums of all kinds scattered around the shop, and you can see fish swimming by through a transparent floor. Famous Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara has even been there twice.

Among verdant green rice paddies is a large fishpond. But built on top happens to be a wooden coffee shop.

The cafe comes into view as you walk along a long wooden bridge, with lights strung outside and tiny aquariums dotting the walls. They tell the story of the owner’s life.

My wife loves to drink coffee, so I had the idea to combine it with my professional skill in raising fish. Then I figured that coffee is a leisure activity, so we’ll open a cafe out in the country where it’s relaxing and has a slower pace of life.

Eleven years ago, the owner ran a fish farm where he raised goldfish and fish for eating. But due to competition and decline in the industry, he decided to change directions and conjured the fantasy of opening a coffee shop at his farm with unique fishbowl-like seating. His coffee-loving wife took charge of the menu, and together they embarked on a new career.

Tucked away among calming surroundings, the cafe attracts many visitors. Even the famous Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara has visited twice. The county commissioner, Weng Chang-liang, has brought councilors there to show support.

Activists to take to the streets for traffic safety Sunday, May 25

Civic groups are taking to the streets this coming Sunday for traffic safety, marching from the Legislative Yuan to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications in Taipei. The rally comes following the Sanxia car crash that killed three people, including two 12-year-olds. They’re calling on the government to retrain all drivers, lowering the age at which senior drivers must renew their licenses, and to improve traffic infrastructure.

We cannot remain silent anymore. Our retraining program for seniors’ license renewal only asks simple questions like the driver’s year of birth, what the date is, whether they have colorblindness. There aren’t any road tests or written tests.

NGOs say they do not wish to see anything like the recent Sanxia car crash ever again. As such, the transport ministry must take action to redesign road infrastructure, tighten drivers’ eligibility to obtain a license and improve retraining programs. It should also incorporate traffic calming designs in residential areas. They’re taking to the streets this coming Sunday, marching from the Legislative Yuan to the transport ministry.

We’ve contacted the Ministry of Transportation and Communications over the years, and they tell us they’re only responsible for licensing measures. But over the 30-plus years, they haven’t improved upon the licensing regime.

The activists say since the government stopped accepting public reports of minor traffic violations, too many unfit drivers have been left off the hook. They also say that they’re not asking that older adults be prohibited from getting behind the wheel, but that they should have to take sufficient tests so as to ensure they can quickly react to dangers on the road. They hope that the number of terrible road users can be kept down so kids no longer have to fear for their lives on the streets.
