US Congressmen write to Hilton, Marriot, Hyat over ‘Taiwan, China’

Two members of the US Congress have sent letters to the CEOs of three American hotel chains over their terminology regarding Taiwan. The letters were sent to the heads of the Hilton, Marriot and Hyatt chains, and condemned the usage of the term “Taiwan, China” on websites and promotional materials. They asked the hoteliers whether their decision to refer to Taiwan as such was influenced by China. Let’s hear more.

Asking the hotels whether China pressured them is meant as a way to help the companies come out and say that indeed they were pressured by the CCP. This can be an opportunity to fix the mistakes 10 years later, more or less. So that the names brought about by China’s economic coercion can be corrected with the support of the US government and the recognition of the international community.

This shows there is a consensus between the Republican and Democratic parties that Taiwan is a political entity independent from China. Considering the importance of these congressmen in Washington DC, this can truly be considered the main position of the Republican Party currently ruling the US, and the Trump administration’s policy on Taiwan’s international status and sovereignty.
The US government and Congress have repeatedly underscored the importance of Taiwan’s sovereignty. Now these two congressmen are sending a clear signal to private companies, telling them that they shouldn’t sacrifice the interests of the US’ democratic partners to cater to China.

美國國會議員21日致函給希爾頓、萬豪及凱悅飯店執行長，對於飯店網站和文宣，使用"中國台灣"，表達嚴正關切，並要求飯店答覆是否受到中國指示。

“刻意詢問飯店這個問題(是否受指示) ，其實某種程度，也是幫這些公司解套，就說對呀，當時是受到這個中共的脅迫，(藉此)讓他們再改回來，10年前左右，讓那一波中國挾經濟的脅迫，逼使企業改名的這些錯誤，能夠在美國政府的支持，在國際社會的認同之下，再逐一的改正回來”

“(此舉意味)在共和民主兩黨的共識，就是台灣是獨立於中國之外的政治實體，特別你如果了解，這兩位(發函)參眾議員，在華府的重要性，我們甚至可以認為，這是美國現在執政的共和黨，以及川普政府，對台灣國際地位，主權地位政策的定海神針”
美國從政府到國會一再強調，對台灣主權的重視，並向民間企業釋出明確訊號，迎合中國市場，也不能犧牲民主夥伴利益。
