AI driving system hits brakes when dangerous acceleration detected

A driver in Sanxia recently killed three pedestrians after ramming through a crossing at dangerous speed. To prevent such reckless driving, some car manufacturers are installing AI safety systems. If the AI detects that the driver accidentally slammed on the pedal because they’re nervous or have rising adrenaline, an alarm will sound and the vehicle will slow down automatically. ITRI has also developed a “smart cockpit” that can see through vehicles in front and will notify nearby vehicles of any reckless driving.

To prevent reckless driving, some car manufacturers are incorporating a “smart speed assist” powered by AI. If the sensor detects that the driver is accelerating too fast, an alarm will sound. Let’s try it out now. I’m starting to drive, but if I suddenly hit the gas, the alarm sounds and the vehicle gradually slows down.

When responding to an emergency, your adrenaline rises. When that happens, you might step on the pedal especially hard, and the alarm will go off.

The small device that looks like a card reader can be directly installed on the pedal. If it detects that the driver accelerated too fast, it determines something is amiss and reduces the speed. The patented technology is in its second iteration. In the future, the maker plans to offer an eye detection system to see whether a driver is fatigued by counting the number of blinks.

ITRI has also developed a “smart cockpit.” The transparent panoramic display uses eye-tracking to detect which direction the driver is looking and can see through the vehicle in front. If there’s a pedestrian or turning vehicle, it helps to avoid a collision.

Since the driving environment in Taiwan is complex, with many accidents large and small, ITRI and various businesses are developing AI systems to evaluate drivers’ conditions with the aim of reducing collisions.

外型有如小小讀卡機，可以直接安裝在油門上，只要偵測到駕駛重踩油門，就能偵測到異常，瞬間降速，專利技術研發到第二代，接下來，甚至還會推出眼球偵測，透過眨眼次數，判斷否疲勞駕駛。

工研院也推出「智慧座艙」，車載透明全景顯示系統，使用眼球追蹤技術偵測視線方向，直接穿透前車影像，就算有行人、車子竄出，也能避免碰撞。

畢竟台灣的交通，用路環境複雜，大小車禍不斷，工研院、還有各大軟硬體開發商，結合AI 整合系統，判斷駕駛的生理狀況，來降低車禍率。

Government supports Indigenous peoples, increasing Taiwan’s visibility

In a recent TV program, Council of Indigenous Peoples Minister Ljaucu Zingrur shared what President Lai Ching-te has done to support Indigenous peoples during his first year in office. Zingrur discussed how the government offers coaches and athletes annual subsidies, but can do more to support athletes traveling abroad to represent Taiwan in international competitions. Thank you to the president and premier for allocating NT$200 million every year starting this year so that the council can focus on taking care of Indigenous athletes, such as offering off-site training and supporting their living expenses.

Indigenous athletes have achieved great results internationally, including Olympic medalists Kuo Hsing-chun, a weightlifter of Amis descent, and Chen Nien-chin, a boxer of Amis and Bunun descent. About half the members of the baseball team that won the Premier12 championship are Indigenous. These athletes have increased Taiwan’s visibility through their impressive achievements, connecting with the international community.

For example, in the past we’ve provided support by helping museums curate exhibits and by helping organize their museums. They’ve also come to Taiwan and visited our Indigenous villages. We share the same language roots with Austronesian countries.

Indigenous peoples are actively engaging in international exchanges, increasing Taiwan’s visibility and spreading Indigenous cultures through sporting competitions and diplomacy.

Olympic badminton champion Lee Yang pairs up with 104-year-old

The World Masters Games on Monday had a star-studded game. Two-time Olympic gold medalist Lee Yang paired up with the games’ ambassador, 104-year-old Lin Yu-mao for men’s badminton doubles. Needless to say, they won, even though Lee played against his own father and his coach from high school.

The player in a red patterned shirt is Olympic champion Lee Yang. He makes a sudden and precise leap to hit his opponents with a smash and wins a point. One wouldn’t expect anything less from a two-time Olympic gold medalist.

His opponents aren’t just anyone. It’s Lee’s own father Lee Chun-yu and Cheng Yung-cheng, the badminton coach of his high school. Close as they might be, Lee Yang isn’t going to water it down. Though Lee isn’t playing with his longtime partner Wang Chi-lin, his teammate this time catches the spotlight just the same.

He catches and returns every strike to the opposite team. It’s 104-year-old Lin Yu-mao, also the Guinness World Record holder for oldest badminton player. The power pairing wins the match 11-9.

The elder Lee and Cheng high-five one another despite losing. The crowd cheered on wildly. Even Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an watched the game with the two star players.

Lee Yang is an Olympic gold medalist. Partnering with him made me feel so youthful. Even before stepping a foot on the court, I knew that there’s already a 50% chance of winning today.

Lin was also a torchbearer at the World Masters Games’ opening ceremony. On that day, he shared with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, also a torch bearer, his secret to longevity: looking at pretty women.

US high schoolers learn professional media production in FTV studio course

Kainan University and FTV recently held a “Focus Week” introducing TV and film in Taiwan, welcoming 55 high schoolers from the US to participate in eight days of activities. Aside from visiting attractions and experiencing Taiwanese culture, they also visited FTV’s virtual studio, where they were dazzled by high-tech filming techniques.

Realistic lightning strikes, giant helicopters flying across the screen, and a thrilling baseball game all flash by within seconds. FTV invested NT$200 million into this high-end audiovisual equipment, creating a studio that holds up among the best in the world. Some American students even made the voyage to check it out.

55 students from Washington state recently came to Taiwan for eight days of activities. Apart from experiencing Taiwan’s diverse cultures, they also participated in a professional film and TV production course held in collaboration with Kainan University, where they learned how to tell stories through film.

We get to see how media is really produced in a professional format. Also, we get to learn about news reporters, and using a teleprompter. These are all very unique experiences that normal people don’t get to see. And so it’s really cool to see the behind-the-scenes actions of media production.

The students got to learn about reporting both on stage and behind the scenes. In the virtual studio, the wraparound screen incorporates AR technology, merging the digital and the real in an eye-opener for the students.

NTU doctoral graduate creates site for learning Taiwanese through TV

Many people find it hard to study Taiwanese. But now there’s a new website that aims to make it easy. Called “TaigiTube,” users of the ad-free and cost-free site can search for a word or phrase, and it will find a video clip that uses the word. The creator is recent NTU doctoral graduate Chang Kai-wei. When he was little, he would often watch dramas with his grandma, which gave him the idea to learn Taiwanese through TV shows. After being up for just two weeks, the site has already had hundreds of thousands of visits.

“Going out for a walk in the late afternoon, the sun is so bright that I can hardly open my eyes.” I want to express this in Taiwanese, but my Taigi isn’t fluent enough. Now there’s no need to worry. I can find a clip from a drama to learn how.

Ah, that’s how you say it! Just open this website and type your search into the searchbar, and it’ll find a few YouTube clips for you to watch that use the phrase.

The actors become teachers, reading it out for you to hear in the way that people would actually say it. This is TaigiTube, which went online earlier this month. In less than two weeks, the site has already had hundreds of thousands of hits. The creator is 26-year-old Chang Kai-wei, who just earned his PhD in communication engineering from NTU.

Someone abroad created the YouGlish website. Before when I was studying English, I used it to study pronunciation. There was nothing like that for Taiwanese, so I figured I could make it. I scoured YouTube for videos. If it has subtitles, I can add it to my database.

Chang spent three months building a search engine using subtitles provided by YouTube. The finished site has over 10,000 links, all from dramas or news programs. It includes 10 million phrases, all inspired by memories of watching TV with his grandmother.

When I was little, I watched TV dramas with my grandma to study Taiwanese, like Night Market Life. They’re beloved memories I have with her. I figured I could share these memories with others.

These moments spent with his grandmother have been compiled into TaigiTube. His professors also encouraged him to do research that can benefit people. In July, Chang plans to go to MIT in the US to do postdoctoral research.

What I’m looking forward to more is for people in Taiwan to interact with the functions on the site, on TaigiTube. I’m still creating functions, like adding songs in Taiwanese.

Chang plans to add more than 200,000 Taiwanese songs to the catalogue. Hopefully by making learning fun, the language can be passed down to new generations of speakers.

Comedian Nadow Lin and celeb Yi Yi Chen celebrate love

Dozens of celebrities gathered on Sunday for a very special wedding reception. Comedian Nadow Lin and his wife Yi Yi Chen held a celebration of their love, after tying the knot earlier this year. The touching event left few with dry eyes, as the couple proclaimed their love for each other. The two have stuck together through thick and thin, even after Nadow suffered a stroke that could’ve ended in tragedy.

With his tight curls and black framed glasses, it seems like time hasn’t passed for the last eight years. Nadow Lin and his wife Yi Yi Chen on Sunday held a wedding banquet with 50 tables.

Taichung breaks ground for Tadao Ando’s first Children’s Book Forest outside Japan

Japanese master architect Tadao Ando has brought his iconic “Children’s Book Forest” to Taichung’s Maple Garden. Ando has designed four Children’s Book Forests in his native Japan, and this is his first overseas. The Taichung Children’s Book Forest resembles an egg nestled among greenery, symbolizing an incubator for a next generation of bright minds. The construction is expected to be completed by 2026.

One of the greatest architect, when he was 80 years old and holding his touring exhibition in Taiwan, he said that he hoped to bring one of his career-defining works, the “Children’ Book Forest” to Taiwan, and that he’d design it for Taiwan, free of charge.

According to Ando, the Taichung Children’s Book Forest, with its oval shape viewed from above, resembles an egg incubating the future generation. This design aims to inspire humankind to achieve an equilibrium with nature, so as to create a bright future. It also coveys how, in the age of AI, reading is what kindles the boundless creativity and potential of children.

Mr. Ando believes this is a very important work in his career. He hopes not to use government funding. He said if he accepts government funding, then the government will intervene. He’s very particular with the location, because every one of his design must blend into the surroundings, be it forests or other environments, so he’s very particular with the choice of location.

The design by a living master will be located right in the center of a leafy and upscale neighborhood, which is sure to inspire awe and wonder once realized. The construction of Taichung Children’s Reading Forest is set for completion by 2026, and will be the 50th library in the city.
