ITRI provides support to repair technicians in wake of Typhoon Danas

Typhoon Danas left some 2,500 electricity poles lying on the ground after it swept over Taiwan last week. Taipower technicians have been working around the clock to repair the damage and restore power supply. And they were not alone in their efforts. The Industrial Technology Research Institute lent them a helping hand, providing accommodation for all the workers, so that they could have a good night’s sleep. It also dispatched a self-developed mobile solar storage system to disaster areas, to provide power while repairs are underway.

Almost 2,500 of Taipower’s electricity poles were damaged by Typhoon Danas, far breaking the record of 1,000 broken poles set by Typhoon Soudelor in 2015. Taipower technicians have been working day and night, braving the wind and rain to restore the electrical supply, erecting new poles and repairing damaged areas. Their hard work allowed for the electrical supply to be restored in the shortest time possible. They were assisted by ITRI, which offered dormitories to workers unconditionally, becoming a major supporter of the repair technicians.

Some people depend on respirators to stay alive, so it’s really scary for them. The sooner we can restore the electricity supply to them, the better. They treated us to breakfast so we are extremely thankful to them. We have been working very hard, but it’s OK.

Technicians were getting ready for a day of hard work, when they saw breakfast and drinks were waiting for them in the lobby. More than 300 Taipower maintenance workers have moved into the employee dorms at ITRI’s Liujia Campus, where they can have a good night’s rest to recharge before another toilsome day.

If we had two people sharing a bed, they wouldn’t be able to truly get a good sleep. It’s great here. Everyone has a bed and a room of their own, so they don’t disturb each other. When you’re tired, you can just lie down and sleep.

A post about ITRI’s kind gesture has garnered more than 10,000 comments and likes on Facebook. But that’s not all the institute has done. It also deployed a self-developed mobile solar storage system that can provide electricity after a disaster, for uses such as daily necessities, charging mobile phones and emergency medical care. The institute is present at this critical moment, to help victims get through difficult times.

中颱丹娜絲重創台電2500支電線桿，台電人員不眠不休，全力搶修，力拼復電，而台電人員站在前線支援的背後，則有工研院調派移動式光儲系統，提供災區民生、手機與醫療緊急用電，同時更無條件提供員工宿舍，做為台電檢修人員休息據點。

台電電線桿，受到中颱丹娜絲影響，將近2500支電線桿損壞，遠遠超過蘇迪勒颱風，創下近千支的斷桿紀錄，台電人員不分日夜，無懼風雨，重新接線、架設電線桿，連日趕工搶修，讓絕大部分用電，都可以在最短時間進行復電，而工研院在背後，無條件提供員工宿舍，成了台電檢修人員，最強後盾。

“需要什麼生命的呼吸器那種，那個也很恐怖，所以說早點給他們復電，應該是最好的。早餐都是他們在招待的，所以很感謝他們，雖然我們也是做得很辛苦，也是還好啦。”

檢修人員一早外出趕工，宿舍外頭大廳，早早就準備好早餐、飲品，工研院六甲院區員工宿舍，四天內已經有超過三百名台電檢修人員進駐，讓使命必達的台電人員，能夠好好睡上一覺，補充體力，整裝再出發。

“兩個人一張床這樣的話，他們在睡覺精神上就比較不好，在這裡很棒，一人有一張床，一人一個房間不會互相影響，所以做再怎麼累躺下去就可以睡覺了。”

工研院的暖心舉動，讓臉書湧入破萬網友，留言按讚。而另一方面，工研院也調派自行研發的移動式光儲系統，提供災區民生、手機與醫療緊急用電，關鍵時刻，沒有缺席，一起協助災民挺過難關。

A Taipower technician got a life-threatening electric shock while restoring electricity

A Taipower technician on Tuesday got electrocuted and instantly lost all vital signs while carrying out power restoration work in Chiayi. He was sent to the hospital and put on ECMO for life support. On Wednesday morning, top officials, including the president, paid the victim a visit. Meanwhile, power restoration work is ongoing so that those without power can resume with their lives as soon as possible.

Top officials, including President Lai Ching-te arrive at Chi Mei Hospital, Liouying to visit a Taipower technician who got electrocuted and left in critical condition while doing repairs. Lai’s expression appears grave as he listens to the doctors describe the patient’s state.

The Taipower technician in question is 36-year-old Mr. Lee. In the afternoon of the 15th, while he was carrying out power restoration work in Chiayi’s Yijhu Township, he got an electric shock and immediately lost all vital signs. Up to 20% of his body is covered in burns. For now, he’s put on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for life support.

After we arrived, we found that the injured 36-year-old man had an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. After necessary emergency care procedures, we sent him to Chi Mei Hospital, Liouying for treatment.

He’s undergoing targeted temperature management. We’ll determine his condition again in three days. For now we’re happy to report that his cardiovascular function is stable.

Meanwhile, Taipower technicians are still carrying out restoration works despite Mr. Lee’s accident, so that those affected can resume their lives as usual.

Han Sheng 55th year exhibition held till July 28

An exhibition celebrating 55 years of Han Sheng Magazine is now underway at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park. The show explores the magazine’s vision of its legacy in preserving and promoting folk culture, design, and education. FTV reporter Stephany Yang gives us some highlights!

The exhibition offers a behind-the-scenes look into Han Sheng’s editorial process, featuring handwritten notes and field sketches by its editors and reporters. It showcases the magazine’s meticulous approach to cultural documentation. That includes the extensive research behind features about the Huishan Clay Figurines, a traditional folk art from Wuxi with over 400 years of history. As well as the in-depth reporting of Organic Reports, which explored Taiwan’s early organic farming movement.

How did the experienced editors choose their topics back then? They focused on grassroots life among the common people, which still exists today. Or if something is on the verge of disappearing, like the Huishan clay figurines featured in this exhibition, they would pay special attention to it. The second criterion is urgent issues, for example, organic farming reports, which are related to the topic of pesticides. Not only were they very clear about their topic selection, but they also had specific research methods. When you’re researching something, what must you pay attention to? There are the ’4 Methods and 16 Principles,’ which we unveil in the exhibition.

Han Sheng was established in 1971 as a cultural publication and design studio to preserve and promote traditional folk arts, crafts, and culture. This exhibition celebrates 55 years of Han Sheng Magazine by exploring the magazine’s legacy, story, and future aspirations.

In January 1971, Han Sheng published its magazine in English, to balance cultural exchange between East and West. At the time, the founder Wu Mei-yun, Linda, believed that Taiwan was too superficially or even negatively perceived abroad. Therefore, the magazine aimed to introduce Taiwan’s folk culture and everyday life. The first issue featured topics like Mazu worship and stinky tofu. Later issues introduced many artists, such as Ju Ming in his younger years, and folk artists working with materials like red copper. They later explored themes like food, clothing, housing, transportation, and entertainment. By 1978, the magazine transitioned to a Chinese edition, to bridge tradition and modernity, as many historical sites in Taiwan were being discarded or demolished at that time. The Chinese edition aimed to preserve folk culture. They produced 161 issues, forming a kind of cultural gene bank or a database of folk traditions. Now, it is being transformed into a digital archive, allowing more people in creative fields, such as designers, curators, artists, and photographers, to access and utilize it.

The exhibit is split into six themes and will be held at the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park until July 28.

Noisy traffic can cause 10x more fatalities than pedestrian accidents: research

Traffic noise in Taiwan is more than just annoying. Recent research suggests it can be detrimental to your health. The Taiwan Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology estimates that traffic noise can lead to 4,203 sudden deaths a year, which is over 10 times the number of fatal pedestrian accidents in 2024. Doctors say the noise can also cause infertility and dementia.

During rush hour, moving vehicles emit constant noises of varying degrees of loudness. Pedestrians who are passing by are subjected to all kinds of traffic sounds.

The European Union first started to control traffic noises more than 20 years ago, in the 2000s, and mapped them. Up to now, we’ve done nothing. We can understand the noise map of Paris, but we don’t have a noise map of Taipei.

Doctors are calling on the governments of Taiwan’s six biggest cities to prioritize the roll out of real-time noise maps and remind people to take precautions. They should also add traffic noise monitoring stations so as to crack down on excessive noises and overall prevent traffic noises from killing people.

Keelung sushi shops offering promotions over summer festival

The Keelung Food Festival has begun, and this year’s focus: sushi! More than 20 restaurants are participating, offering specials for the classic combo of sushi and beer. The grand finale is to be held on Sept. 20 at Keelung Bus Station. Visitors are welcome to visit the northern port city to experience its unique culinary culture.

This dazzling array of sushi includes tender salmon and tuna, not to mention delightfully chewy squid. Just this spread alone would cause anyone’s mouth to water. But there’s also a show to come.

A chef prepares an entire fish on the spot. Skilled with the knife, he removes the finest parts, extracting a glistening tender fillet. Keelung Deputy Mayor Chiu Pei-lin was invited onstage to try her hand at assembling a piece.

People come to Keelung mostly to eat seafood. Keelung’s fishing culture has been around for over 400 years now, so the first thing you do when you come here has to be to eat. The best sushi, the freshest sashimi is in Keelung. This is the best thing about our city.

Taiwanese emigrants fly home to voice support for Great Recall Campaign

Many overseas Taiwanese have flown back to their native country to cast their vote in the recall elections. On Wednesday morning, 20 of them held a press conference with the Taiwan Civil Liberties Union to urge other overseas Taiwanese to come back and vote "Yes" to recall KMT lawmakers.

A ten-day countdown begins for recall elections on July 26. Taiwanese emigrants have flown back to advocate in support of mass recalls.
