Elderly man rides mobility scooter 16km for famous roast duck

A 97-year-old man in Taichung recently set out on his electric mobility scooter to travel all the way from suburban Tanzi to the city center. A police officer stopped to help when the small scooter broke down in the South District. When asked where he was going, the man said he was headed to Wuri District to pick up some roast duck for his friends. He’d already traveled 16km! The officer couldn’t help but admire his dedication to his friends and passion for food.

This 97-year-old man is riding his electric mobility scooter all the way from Tanzi. When he reaches South District in Taichung, the scooter suddenly stops moving. A passerby informed the police, and an officer came by to provide assistance.

His home in Tanzi is well north of central Taichung. The officer was curious why he rode all the way to South District. Turns out there was a yummy reason.

Why was this old man riding so far, even crossing district lines? He was going to buy roast duck. So how good is this duck?

The man rode 16km just to buy roast duck. We found the store he was headed to. It’s this place—a famous local joint in Wuri.

A chef stir-fries these pieces of duck over high heat. But you can’t miss the slices wrapped in a thin pancake. This shop in Wuri has been open for over 20 years. Even after closing, the owner is hard at work.

Let’s take a look at the old man’s journey. He set out from Tanzi and made it all the way to South District, at least 16km away. To get to his destination, he was still 3 to 4km out.

I’m really touched he was coming all the way here to buy duck. He had to travel so far and he’s not young. It’s dangerous. He could have asked someone to help get it for him.

On a mission to treat his friends, the man evaded his family and caregiver to set off on a journey across districts for roast duck. It’s a good thing he didn’t run into any trouble along the way. The duck might be delicious, but it can be dangerous for seniors his age to drive on the road. Next time, it would be safer to ask someone to pick it up for him.

台中高齡97歲的老爺爺，獨自一人騎乘電動代步車，從潭子前往市區，因為車輛故障在南區被員警攔停協助，一問才知道，這為近百歲的老爺爺，是為了要到烏日區，買北平烤鴨款待朋友，竟然一路跨區騎了16公里，不由得讓警方佩服他對友情的堅定，以及對美食的熱忱。

高齡97歲的爺爺從潭子，騎著電動代步車，來到台中南區，但車突然不動了，路人報警，員警協助幫忙。

潭子的家在台中北邊，員警好奇，爺爺怎麼會大老遠騎到南區來，原來有原因。

千里迢迢，跨區遠征，令人好奇，爺爺要買的烤鴨，到底是什麼好滋味？

大火快炒鴨架子香氣四溢，一鴨兩吃怎能錯過片鴨包著餅皮吃，烏日烤鴨老店，在地經營20多年，過了用餐時間老闆還是忙不停。

來看老爺爺多麼風塵僕僕，他從潭子出發一路到南區，這跨區路程至少16公里遠，距離目的地烤鴨店，其實還有3至4公里。

“他要來我們這邊買烤鴨，是很感動啊，因為他騎那麼遠，年紀又那麼大，但又危險啦。他應該可以請他家人，幫他購買吧”

高齡爺爺為了招待朋友，瞞著家人和看護，不辭辛勞跨區買烤鴨，所幸途中沒有發生意外，名店烤鴨好吃歸好吃，不過長者騎車有風險，下回還是請家人代買，比較安全啦。

Truck carrying full load of steel bars crashes into bus

One person is dead, and another 14 are injured after a semi-trailer truck carrying steel bars crashed into a Kuo Kuang bus in New Taipei’s Wanli District this morning. The truck was coming around a curve when it lost balance and collided head-on into the oncoming bus in the opposite lane. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident.

A loud bang comes from a collision, when a semi-trailer truck loaded with steel bars crashes into a Kuo Kuang bus. Steel bars numbered in the hundreds are flung right against the bus. It happened so fast, that the bus had no way to avert the crash. Shattered glass spatters everywhere and passengers are thrown off their seats.

It’s complete chaos at the scene of the incident. The bus’s windshield is completely destroyed, and the front of the vehicle is severely damaged. The truck trailer is toppled against the bus and steel bars are strewn all over the road.

Inside the bus, the aisle is littered with glass shards and covered in blood.

Rescuers are racing with time as they carry injured passengers out of the vehicle. This fatal traffic accident happened in New Taipei’s Wanli District, and left one dead and 14 injured.

One patient had an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, meaning they showed no signs of breathing or heartbeat and their pupils were dilated. After more than 30 minutes of resuscitation efforts by our emergency medical team, they were pronounced dead.

I was napping at the time, so when the crash happened I was completely thrown off the seat. It was really dramatic. There were glass shards flying all over the place.

I hit my head, and glass spattered in. The person in front of me had it worse. We couldn’t wake him up.

It could have been worse. Had the bus driver not managed to keep the vehicle from toppling, could’ve led to even more casualties. The driver said he did see that the truck had deviated towards road center, but it was too late to dodge it.

The driver said there was a banging noise when it crashed into the truck and really scared everyone. He got off and saw that it was a disaster.

It’s about 3km from here to our company, which is within a 10-minute drive. The driver was employed by our contractor.

The Highway Bureau later found that the truck in question had passed all relevant checks but had been in use for 25 years, which may be a safety concern. An investigation is still underway to determine whether the cause was due to human error or mechanical failure.

Hairpins are also very special. When you wear hairpins, you will feel very elegant. There is a wide range of hanfu to choose from. You can easily find one that suits you, and you can wear a more contemporary makeup look.

The Mamianqun, also known as the traditional Chinese "horse-face skirt," has seen a surge in popularity in recent years. Stylist Betty Chen suggests pairing it with more commonly worn pieces, such as lace tops or white blouses.

We assist our patrons in taking photographs in their hanfu. The colors of Dadaocheng vary with the seasons. Everyone is familiar with the “purple Dadaocheng,” which is most prominent during the spring. When paired with the clothing here and the surrounding street scenes, it creates a harmonious picture."

Chen says, their vision goes beyond preserving tradition; it focuses on innovating and adapting hanfu for modern lifestyles. Through their designs and styling, the brand aims to inspire people to rediscover hanfu as a part of their daily lives and make hanfu accessible to all.

A shaved ice shop in Xiluo, Yunlin now has a new offering: a plum tomato slushy. It’s a refreshing treat with a unique flavor. Meanwhile, a taro farm in Yunlin’s Linnei Township is offering bowls of taro shaved ice for free to students with perfect scores. Students who bring in a test paper with a score of 100 receive the icy treat for free. The farm’s owner said the campaign is meant to encourage students to study hard, while also promoting locally grown taro.

On a hot summer day, a bowl of shaved ice is very satisfying—especially when topped with delicious fruity toppings. Even better: students who visit this taro farm with a perfect test score can get a bowl of taro-topped shaved ice for free!

Located in Yunlin’s Linnei Township, taro farm Jiao Yu Bu is using desserts and farming education to boost the local taro industry. CNN makes special report on Taiwan’s recent joint military and civilian drills

US media outlet CNN recently aired a report on Taiwan’s recently concluded joint military and civilian exercises. The news outlet’s Taipei correspondent covered the drills extensively, from interviews with retired servicemen, to footage from last week’s air raid drills in Taipei. The reporter noted that unlike in the past, the drills this year were held in close presence to everyday people and daily life.

A report from US media outlet CNN interviewed a retired soldier on his thoughts on Taiwan’s most expansive, combined military and civilian drills ever.

However, this year’s drills weren’t only the most expansive or the longest, but also held close to everyday people and activities. Additionally, many scenarios also weren’t scripted, so the military was really tested on responsiveness.
