Highest meteorological tides flood coast of Southern Taiwan

Several areas in Southern Taiwan are seeing the highest astronomical tide of the year this week, and flooding has resulted in many areas, including Cijin District in Kaohsiung and Donggang Township in Pingtung. Some locals are taking the flooding in stride, however, saying that it’s not so different from the spring tides that happen four times a month.
The road outside this market in Cijin has turned into a river. Shoppers roll up their cuffs as they wade across to vendors, completely unfazed.

It’s not always like this. Only at high tide on the 1st and 15th days of the lunar cycle.
The tide is especially high this time around, due to the alignment of the Earth, Sun and Moon. Locals say pretty much every street in Cijin is at least partially flooded. They say the sight is common at high tide on the 1st and 15th days of the lunar cycle, so they’ve long grown accustomed to it.

It’s really annoying. Customers can’t come in, if they don’t have rain boots.

Several areas in Southern Taiwan are seeing the highest astronomical tides of the year between July 22 and 27. Besides Cijin in Kaohsiung, similar scenes are unfolding in a neighborhood in Donggang, Pingtung.
The Central Weather Administration warns that the high tides could cause short-term flooding or seawater backflow when paired with rains and poor drainage. If you are in coastal areas, be aware of your surroundings and be prepared for a few wet days.

全台天文大潮來襲，今年首波就發生在7月22到27日，南部地區首當其衝。高雄旗津和屏東東港東津里，都出現海水倒灌情況，居民一早醒來就看到家門前有小河，積水深度超過腳踝。雖然是定期難免發生的狀況，但還是對居民生活，造成影響。
高雄旗津的市場，馬路變成小河，整個路面都是積水，居民買菜都得涉水而過，只是大家早就都見怪不怪。

原來是天文大潮導致海水倒灌情況更加嚴重，旗津地區部分馬路不是全淹就是半淹。海水倒灌每個月初一、十五，都會來上一波，雖然無奈但也只能接受。

“很麻煩啦，客人不能進來，沒有雨鞋啊。”

“(抽水機)抽也沒什麼用，但只要一下子等下它就退潮了。”
今年全台的天文大潮分為三波，首波就發生在7月22到27日，南部地區首當其衝。不只高雄旗津，屏東東港東津里也出現同樣情形。
氣象局提醒，年度大潮期間內，沿海潮位普遍偏高，若遇上降雨或排水不良，就容易造成海水倒灌與短時積淹水。提醒沿海居民要多加注意，往來民眾也要警覺留心。
