Two ‘bawan’ eateries in Changhua among top winners of 500 Bowls Award

The third annual “500 Bowls” ranking of Taiwan’s top street food is here! Only five earned the highest distinction of “three bowls.” Among them are two stalls in Changhua selling bawan, drawing many foodies to see what makes them so special.

Homemade bawan is fried to perfection in a vat of oil. When it’s ready, it’s cut open and drenched in a secret sauce. It makes your mouth water just looking at it. This restaurant, Beidou Zhan’s Bawan, made it onto this year’s “500 Bowls” list of awardees, earning the top honor of “three bowls.”

We found out about the 500 Bowls list yesterday, and that Beidou Zhan’s Bawan was on it. So today we came here to try it. I think they really earned their spot.

Many people have been eating here for years. The owner follows the old methods, using her own hands to knead the dough.

We make triangular bawan here. They’re also made by hand. Everyone is homemade.

This other bawan spot in Changhua, Bei Men Kou Bawan, also earned “three bowls.” You can tell how popular they are by how long the line is.

This crispy bawan is packed with pork, mushroom, and salty egg yolk.

The meat is quality. It’s fresh. And the seasoning gives it a sweet finish.

Out of all the winners of this year’s 500 Bowls Award, only five were given the distinction of earning “three bowls.” For two of them to be bawan stalls in Changhua is truly an honor.

第三屆全台小吃「500碗」名單出爐,其中有五家小吃,獲得"3碗"的最高殊榮,彰化肉圓就包辦了兩個名額,吸引不少民眾特地前往朝聖。

手工肉圓,在油鍋裡炸到滋滋作響,起鍋後,一刀劃開,淋上獨門醬料,讓人看了口水直流,彰化這間北斗肉圓詹,今年入選全台小吃500碗名單,獲得最高名次"三碗"殊榮。

“因為我們昨天知道500碗,彰化北斗肉圓詹有入選,所以我們今天專程過來享用美食,我覺得非常實至名歸”

“我從小就都吃這間肉圓”

不少民眾,一吃就是好幾年,業者遵從老一輩留下的古法,手工捏製留下的指痕,也成為另類特色。

“我們這種是比較屬於三角形的肉圓,然後有手痕的,每一顆都是手工製作”

同樣獲得3碗肯定的,還有這間北門口肉圓,從長長排隊人龍,就能看出他的高人氣。

脆皮肉圓,包入豬肉、香菇、鹹蛋黃,料多實在。

今年的全台小吃500碗名單,只有五家得到三碗肯定,其中彰化肉圓就佔了兩個名額,再度成為話題焦點。
