Dive shop boss calls mob to get kneeling apology from college kids

An aggressive encounter with an armed mob spoiled what was supposed to be a relaxing trip to Xiaoliuqiu for a group of college students. And it all started with a near-traffic-accident. Four of the college students had been riding on two scooters when they almost crashed against a local dive shop operator. After cursing him out, they returned to their hostel. But that was not the end of it, as the man and a dozen other people armed with sticks showed up meaning business. Let’s hear more.

It was just a minor road dispute but they forced them to kneel down. They got slapped in the face, and they were sworn at. They were really aggressive. Some of the older guys were armed with sticks, ready to hit people. We didn’t want to escalate the issue, so the two of them knelt down and bowed in apology.

No formal report was filed with us, but we have launched an investigation. All the individuals involved have been identified. From what we know, it all started from a verbal traffic dispute. No knives or injuries were reported. The Pingtung Prosecutors Office is handling the case on suspicion of the criminal charges of disorderly conduct and coercion.

The footage of the encounter was secretly recorded by a friend of the tourists, who didn’t dare to post it until they had all left the island. The backlash online has been tremendous. Commenters say the dive shop owner behaved like a mobster, and tarnished the image of what is marketed as one of Taiwan’s most peaceful tourist destinations.

遭到這樣的對待，同行友人當下在遠處偷偷錄下整個過程，一直等到離開了小琉球，才敢公開影片。網友也痛批這宛如流氓行徑，已經嚴重重創小琉球形象。

Interior ministry mulling additional requirement for Chinese-born residents-to-be

The central government’s tightening of enforcement on Chinese-born residents’ immigration continues. Earlier this month, the interior ministry announced that it’s planning an additional requirement for those seeking residency: proof that they’ve nullified their PRC passport. China’s Taiwan Affairs Office has since warned citizens against cutting their own passports, while the Mainland Affairs Council said China’s warning is tantamount to a threat against their own citizens.

Since April, Chinese-born residents have had to prove they’ve given up household registration in China. And now, Taiwan is mulling an additional requirement for those seeking residency: proof that they’ve nullified their PRC passport, either with a formal declaration or the passport itself, with a cut corner. But China’s Taiwan Affairs Office warned citizens against cutting.

The Taiwan Affairs Office also slammed Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang’s comments on Monday, in which she said that the two sides of the strait are not subordinate to one another and that Taiwan “recognizes the People’s Republic of China.”

Durian lovers flock to themed market on Kaohsiung’s Love River

A Durian Market stunk up the shores of Kaohsiung’s Love River last weekend, as nearly 40 vendors peddled all sorts of smelly wares such as durian crepes, durian ice cream, and durian mochi. Yet some of the vendors themselves were not fans and had to bear the smell to do business, while others had to put up with it for the sake of their durian-loving spouse.

Crowds line up to buy freshly cut durian along the banks of Kaohsiung’s Love River during this smelliest of events, last weekend’s Durian Market.

A thick layer of durian spread is coated onto a bun before laying on a slab of butter to complete this durian pineapple bun.

It’s better than the usual one. It has a more complex flavor.

This durian sherbert from Singapore is already flavorful enough. Adding some durian drizzle on top makes it even stronger.

The drizzle is so creamy. I like it, I like it.

I especially prepared a really strong version. I made a topping from fresh durian. The flavor is really intense.

Or there are these French crepes, filled with a durian cream filling. Kids and adults both love it.

Nearly 40 vendors served all sorts of durian wares at the market, pleasing fans of this “king of the fruits.” But actually, some of the vendors themselves weren’t so enthused.

Others may not enjoy it, but they’ll come for love.

Volunteers repair home damaged by Typhoon Danas

After Typhoon Danas damaged buildings in Chiayi and Tainan, volunteers from the Heng-shan Charity Group and construction companies worked together to repair the home of a disabled man living alone in Tainan’s Guantian District. They replaced the house’s old roof, reinforced the structure and rebuilt support beams. Thanks to their hard work, the man no longer has to live in fear of recurring typhoon damage.

Typhoon Danas devastated Chiayi and Tainan, which then saw several days of heavy rainfall resulting in severe damage to many old homes in the area. In response, the Heng-shan Charity Group cooperated with a construction company, sending volunteers to repair the home of a 63-year-old disabled man living alone in Tainan’s Guantian District.

Tourism businesses advise on Taroko reconstruction after quake

Facilities at Taroko Gorge in Hualien were severely damaged in last year’s earthquake on April 3, most of which have yet to be repaired. Only the section of Highway 8 from Tianxiang to the entrance to the gorge is open, and provisionally at that. To revitalize local industry and tourism, the Hualien County Government has invited tour businesses to see reconstruction efforts for themselves and give input on how to reintroduce Taroko as the highlight of Hualien.

Hiking Tabido Trail in Taroko National Park offers stunning views of Tianxiang below. The park has been in disarray since the major earthquake that struck on April 3 last year. The section of Highway 8 from Tianxiang to the entrance of the gorge was damaged by rock falls, as well as the popular Taroko Village Hotel.

The northern branch of the National Land Management Agency—which used to be the Construction and Planning Agency—has been asked to help with the Taroko Village Hotel and Changchun Shrine.

To better understand reconstruction efforts in Taroko National Park, the Hualien County Government put together a tour for local tourism operators to see sights like Tianxiang and the entrance to the gorge for themselves. Hopefully by observing the progress, they can understand how best to eventually reopen and revitalize tourism to the park.

Apart from introducing the progress toward reopening sections of the park, the tour also showed tour facilities and safety routes in the hopes of getting feedback from businesses.

I really think it’s possible for people to come here, there will just be limited hours, assuming you come before 8 a.m. or stay for half the day. I think a half-day tour of this area could be promoted.

Tour guides and tourists alike say Taroko is just as beautiful as ever. They aim to design unique itineraries integrating local culture with the landscape to reintroduce the park to visitors. But safety is still the primary consideration before the park can strive for increasing tourism numbers.

Parties weigh in on crash between two Chinese ships

On Monday, two Chinese vessels chasing off a Philippine Coast Guard ship near the disputed Scarborough Shoal ended up in a violent collision. Responses from the two countries couldn’t be more different: the Philippine Coast Guard officers were awarded medals while in China, state media justified the act of intimidation as lawful. Others are weighing in on the incident too. Let’s hear what everyone had to say.

On Monday, the two Chinese ships collided in the South China Sea, near the Scarborough Shoal, a disputed territory claimed by both China and the Philippines. The Chinese ships were attempting to drive away the Philippine Coast Guard vessel, the BRP Suluan, only to end up in a violent collision.

The crash was so powerful, that the Coast Guard vessel’s forecastle was severely smashed. Meanwhile, the PLA Navy’s Guilin destroyer also lost a part of the port bow.

Immediately after the crash, the Philippine Coast Guard made a broadcast offering medical assistance. But despite formalities at sea, the two country’s dispute becomes clear back home.

Once the BRP Suluan docked, all the officers on board were awarded with medals, with praise going particularly to the captain and helmsmen. Meanwhile in China, state media CCTV justified the intimidation against the Philippines at sea.

We took necessary measures, including monitoring, interception and control, to drive the Philippine vessel away in accordance with the law. The on-site operations were conducted with professional discretion and were legitimate and legal.

The CCTV report claimed that its actions were permitted, but said nothing about the collision, drawing derision from hawkish Chinese netizens who said in essence, that it’s no use if military muscles were just for show.
