98-year-old grandma wins 5 golds at World Aquatics Championships

A 98-year-old swimmer from Hengchun made a splash at this year’s World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. Tang Cheng-yao picked up a total of five gold medals all by herself at the swim meet, immediately becoming a sensation at the international event. Though she was happy to have won her races, she was even happier to hand out tote bags to fellow athletes to promote her hometown.

Swimming to the finish line is 98-year-old Tang Cheng-yao from Hengchun. As soon as she touches the wall the arena explodes in cheers.

The senior swimmer recently competed at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore in the women’s 95 to 99 year old division. She picked up five gold medals in several breast stroke and freestyle events.

After the race, I didn’t know I’d get a medal. I just wanted to do my best. I have the spirit of an athlete and I refused to give up until the end.

Wearing her medals, the super grandma posed for photos with athletes from all over the world. She became quite the tourism ambassador for her hometown, giving out tote bags promoting Hengchun to athletes from all over the world.

I told them there are a lot of amazing sights in Taiwan. At the very tip you have Kenting, with its gorgeous landscapes and great people. They also gave me little flag badges.

Passionate about her hometown and now a sports ambassador, Tang Cheng-yao hopes to encourage more older adults to do sports.

Sports can give grandmas in their 80s and up a new hope and a new goal in life.

Living to 98 is a feat in itself, but getting to that age while picking up gold medals is another story. This super grandma says she hopes to swim until she’s 100.

來自屏東恆春的98歲阿嬤唐成瑤，日前到新加坡參加世界游泳大師賽，一口氣拿下五面金牌，頒獎後她與國外選手開心合影，更特別送上印有家鄉恆春字樣的帆布包給大家當紀念品，唐阿嬤說拿金牌很開心，但更重要的是可以藉此機會，擔任觀光大使，讓更多人認識台灣，認識恆春。

水道上，來自屏東恆春，高齡98歲的唐成瑤賣力往前游，抵達終點那一刻，全場歡聲雷動。

遠赴新加坡，參加2025世界游泳大師錦標賽，唐成瑤勇奪女子95到99歲組，蛙式以及自由式，一共五面金牌。

脖子上掛了滿滿金牌，頒獎典禮後，不少外國選手主動和她合照，唐成瑤阿嬤甚至開心的當起台灣觀光大使，把印有家鄉恆春的帆布包，送給外國選手當紀念品。

Large and bright meteor spotted in Kyushu, Japan

The night skies just south of Japan’s main island had flares almost as bright as daylight when a large meteor, known scientifically as a bolide passed through the atmosphere. The event was witnessed by many locals in the area. An expert says the meteoroid that gave the sightings may have been larger than 10m in diameter.

After 11 p.m. on Tuesday, flares appeared in the skies around Kagoshima and Kumamoto in Japan, almost as bright as daylight. A footage captured at a fishing port shows what appears to be a fireball falling from above.

This fireball penetrated the atmosphere and fell onto the Earth’s surface. In some parts of Kyushu and Shikoku the scene was accompanied by thundering sounds. In the end, it fell into the ocean off Kyushu.

This one here is called a bolide, because it’s really bright. But we can’t know for sure if it fell on land. It depends on whether it’s fully abraded.

Many locals there witnessed the bolide event. It was also captured by cameras at Kobe Airport and Kansai International Airport, changing colors from blue-green to orange-red as it fell. Some onlookers even witnessed the extraordinary event while driving.

I’ve seen a meteor before, but I wasn’t quick enough to make a wish. If I were there, I might wonder whether it could be a fallen satellite.

The expert also says that if the meteoroid was large enough that it couldn’t be completely worn away before hitting the Earth’s surface, the remaining debris would be called a meteorite, which is usually quite small.

The probability of a meteor occurring is the same everywhere in the world. Just two days ago one meteor was recorded near the eastern coast of Taiwan.

As for its potential impact on the planet, the expert also says there’s nothing to worry unless the meteoroid is so large its diameter is measured in tens of meters. But even so, people shouldn’t be too worried because scientists all over the world are all keeping watch for any meteor events.

Hotels in central Taiwan offer NT$1 suites to boost occupancy

According to figures from the Tourism Administration, hotel bookings last year had declined by 6.21%, with more and more domestic travelers opting for single-day excursions rather than overnight stays. To boost occupancy rates, a group of hotels in central Taiwan have launched a promotion for NT$1 presidential suites. Fifteen lucky winners are to get rooms as big as 82 ping, which normally go for NT$30,000 per night.

This presidential hotel suite has a wide double bed and even a karaoke lounge. If the kids want to splash around, there’s also this wading pool. It originally costs NT$35,000 to book for the night. But some lucky guests will get the chance to stay there for only NT$1!

Many hotels haven’t even reached 40% occupancy this summer. Overnight stays by domestic travelers have declined. We got together three hotels and are promoting our best rooms to show travelers the quality of our establishments.

According to data from the Tourism Administration, a record 222 million trips were made within Taiwan last year. But hotel bookings were down 6.21%, showing that more travelers are preferring single-day excursions to overnight stays. To get these numbers back up, three hotels had the idea to hold a drawing for NT$1 stays in their nicest suites.

This family from Taoyuan is paying over NT$4,000 to spend a weeknight in Taichung. When they heard about the NT$1 deal, their faces lit up. Apart from this 82-ping suite in Nantun District, another hotel in the Fengjia shopping area is also putting up their 25-ping suite, originally NT$10,000 for a night.

Before the pandemic, our occupancy rate was almost always 90 to 100%. Now, we’re only at around 60%.

It’s not only Taichung hotels that have felt the squeeze. Hotels in Nantou’s Sun Moon Lake are also facing a drop-off in bookings.

When the economy was doing well, overall occupancy rates in Sun Moon Lake would hover around 70 or 80%. But starting from last year, it’s contracted to just 50%. This year has been even worse. On average, we’re only filling 30 to 40% of our rooms.

Three certified hotels in central Taiwan have all agreed to put up five rooms each for the promotion, meaning that 15 lucky groups will get to experience their most luxurious suites for only NT$1. By promoting the best of what they have to offer, the hotels hope it will spark a revival in overnight stays.

AI air pollution visualizer helps find farm burn pits

As a major agricultural area, Pingtung sees a lot of open fires as farmers burn leftover branches and leaves, causing considerable air pollution. To better control these open burnings, the county government has set up two AI air pollution detectors. The systems have successfully identified nearly 90 illegal fires, saving on time and labor. The county’s Environmental Protection Bureau reminds farmers that the county has nine locations for them to drop off agricultural waste.

Among these rolling green fields rises a plume of white smoke. It’s been detected by this AI air pollution identification system, which immediately informed authorities.

The AI system detected the smoke by comparing it with the background color and making a judgment. There’s this plume of white smoke that’s a different color from its surroundings. If it exceeds a certain value, it’ll notify an inspector.

The county inspector can see the footage from his phone and narrow in on the location to go investigate. He found that the person who started the fire is a farmer.

You can’t start open burns at your home. No matter if it’s in your yard or a field. The air quality in the south is already bad. There are nine places to drop off agricultural waste. You can take it there.

Pingtung has a lot of agriculture. Farmers end up with a lot of waste after pruning away leaves and branches. They used to get rid of it by burning it in the field, causing severe pollution. Every year, the local environmental bureau allocates considerable staff for inspection and enforcement, but it’s impossible to catch them all. Now it’s employing the help of technology, starting with setting up two AI systems in Kanding and Yanpu.

With AI detection, we found about 67 open burns in Kanding. We set another up in Daren in May. It’s even worse in northern Pingtung. We’ve already found 22.

The Environmental Protection Bureau stressed that they’re not setting out to catch farmers. The goal is to change the custom of burning agricultural waste in order to improve air quality for everyone.

Taoyuan Pearl Coast Music Festival boasts music A-listers and NBA stars

The inaugural Taoyuan Pearl Coast Music Festival is right around the corner. From Aug. 29 to 31, it will be held at Zhuwei Fishing Harbor with a roster of several A-listers. But it’s more than a music festival. There will also be basketball exhibition games, and one session will even feature two NBA stars. Look no further if you’re looking for a getaway before summer vacation ends.

On Aug. 30, NBA players Karl-Anthony Towns of the New York Knicks and Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers will also make an appearance and interact with the audience while participating in an exhibition game.
