Baseball musical at Metropolitan Hall
Taiwan’s baseball is thriving, with a recent landmark victory at the Little League Baseball World Series. Taiwan defeated the US regional champion 7-0, and won the title for the first time in 29 years. A Taiwanese theater is bringing the game to the stage with a new musical that tells the story of a determined little league baseball team. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke to members of the cast as well as the players from Taiwan’s victorious Dongyuan Elementary School’s Little League team.
The musical follows the journey of the Seagulls, a struggling youth baseball team. Their fortunes begin to change when two very different coaches take on the coaching roles—one disciplined and strategic, the other nurturing and motivational. As the team trains for the national championship, they discover the true meaning of perseverance, teamwork, and chasing dreams. To get into character, the actors had to undergo rigorous training. They even got to train with former baseball stars like Chou Szu-chi.
Liu Yun-hsi
Actor
We do physical training, like catching, pitching, and practicing batting. We also run. Before joining this musical, I didn’t know much about baseball, but after participating, I started reading the rules and watching games.
Chou Szu-chi
Former baseball player
This is probably the first time in Taiwan’s history that baseball and musical theater have been combined. I think using a musical to highlight Taiwan’s baseball history and culture is a powerful way to showcase how deep and rich that culture truly is. Just now, I saw the kids’ form. They were excellent. We assisted with this event by providing guidance on techniques and connecting retired professional players with the actors. It gives them a chance to engage beyond the competitive field and share their experience in new ways. Through musical theater, this collaboration feels really special. I hope it helps people realize that baseball isn’t just something that happens on the field—it can also be expressed on stage.
Fresh off their Little League Baseball World Series Championship, the players of Taiwan’s victorious Little League team attended the musical’s premiere, sharing reflections on their journey to the victory and lending their support to the cast.
Lin Chin-tse
Pitcher for Dong Yuan Elementary
The physical training in June was crucial to the success, because earlier on, my pitching speed wasn’t that fast. The coach said that if we could push through it, it would improve. I’m really happy that we won the World Championship after 29 years. I hope more kids will come play baseball.
Chen Shih-hung
Team captain
The combination of musical theater and baseball is truly amazing. Their performance was fantastic. I hope I can visit Williamsport for the Little League Baseball again when I’m in junior high.
The musical features high-energy musical numbers inspired by classic baseball chants and stadium anthems. Interactive elements allow the audience to cheer, chant, and feel like part of the team.
Lin I-chun
Musical producer
I was on the track and field team when I was younger, and now that I’m older, my son is really passionate about baseball. I believe that for these kids, the perseverance, discipline, and even the aesthetics they develop when growing up are incredibly important. Although we’ve produced many musicals before, we feel strongly about bringing Taiwan’s national sport—baseball—into the theater. We want more families to be able to enjoy the arts together, whether it’s a musical or another performance, and at the same time, bring forward the spirit of baseball.
The musical will be showcased at Metropolitan Hall on September 21 and 22.
