ITRI plays vital role in building trusted chip partnerships: President Liu

2025-09-10

The Semicon Taiwan Network Summit was hosted by ITRI and SEMI on Tuesday, just one day before Semicon Taiwan kicked off. Notable guests at the event included President Lai Ching-te and other top officials from home and abroad. Speaking to the press, ITRI President Edwin Liu highlighted the role of his organization in building trusted semiconductor partnerships between industry and academia, and between Taiwan and the international society.

One day ahead of Semicon Taiwan, the Semicon Network Summit was opened by the president and officials from several countries, including Japan, the UK and Czechia. The forum gathered global leaders across industry, government and academia to foster high-level global dialogue in chip collaboration, to build a resilient semiconductor ecosystem and expand talent development.

Edwin Liu
ITRI President
The most important role for us at ITRI is to provide a platform that serves as a bridge between industry and academia, and between Taiwan and the world. We have many stations and offices abroad that connect Taiwan and the world, in order to promote collaboration and exchanges in chip industry talents.

ITRI President Edwin Liu pointed out that in the coming five to ten years, the semiconductor industry in Asia will require 200,000 additional talents. Therefore, Taiwan faces three pressing challenges. The first is whether Taiwan’s talent supply will be able to catch up with demand; the second concerns the accelerating pace of skill transformation; while the third is the fierce global race for talent that combines both competition and collaboration. He noted that ITRI, serving as a bridge between academia and industry is committed to cultivating a resilient chip talent ecosystem.

Chen Jang-fung
Vice President of Engineering, Applied Materials
Taiwan is very strong in semiconductor manufacturing, supply chain and talent pool. Applied Materials and Taiwan should form a multi-layered, sustainability-driven, differentiated relationship for engineering, talent sharing and platform sharing.

Trusted partnerships between different countries are key in the face of rapidly changing market and geopolitical realities.
