New viewing platform offers bird’s eye view of Taipei

Looking for a new spot to snap a scenic bird’s eye view of Taipei? A viewing platform in the shape of an ark has just been built in a scenic area near Jiantan MRT station. It offers vistas of attractions like Taipei 101 to the south and Nvidia’s new Taipei office, the Tamsui River estuary and other attractions to the north. Another spot that’s becoming popular in photos posted on social media is the end of Zhongshan North Road section 7 in Tianmu, as from this vantage point the cityscape resembles San Francisco. Let’s take a look:

This stunning eye-catching “Ark” has been created with shipping as the inspiration. The “bow” features an observation deck offering bird’s eye views of the Grand Hotel, Taipei 101 and the Keelung River. The rear “Breeze Terrace” offers panoramic views of the Tamsui River and the Taipei Performing Arts Center.

Junior high baseball coach makes miracle recovery after bus crash

The coach of a junior high baseball team is making a miracle recovery after a shocking traffic crash last month. 33-year-old Hsu Chi-jen had been driving a mini bus back from a match, when the vehicle crashed on the highway. He and the seven young baseball players on the bus were left with injuries, some of them severe. In Hsu’s case he suffered extensive skull fractures that would’ve usually left survivors in a coma or bedridden. But now’ he’s able to stand up and even walk in what has been dubbed a miraculous recovery.

Propped on a cane and with some help, he inches his way forward. He’s Hsu Chi-jen, who was involved in a serious accident last month with a student baseball team.

On Aug. 15, the 33-year-old coach was driving a minibus back from a game with seven baseball players from Min Ho Junior High’s Cihui campus, when the bus collided against a crash truck, injuring everyone. Hsu suffered a skull fracture and was rushed to hospital in critical condition. Doctors performed to craniotomy surgeries to save him.

Extensive skull fractures like his are quite rare. We did everything we could to reconstruct his shattered skull, control his intracranial pressure, and remove the brain hemorrhage. Then, we used 3D printing technology to reconstruct his skull.

Patients with similar injuries are often left in a coma or permanently bedridden. But Coach Hsu was very lucky. One month on, he’s miraculously able to move around all by himself. His memory and speech hasn’t yet fully recovered, however, and at a recent press conference he sat silently listening to the conversation with his eyes closed.

He’s still speaks very slowly, and forgets people and events. There’s many things he doesn’t remember, and he can’t form a full sentence. It’s all short phrases. We’ve asked him about the crash, but he basically doesn’t remember anything.

This has all been really painful for all of us. We are deeply grateful to the staff at Chi Mei Hospital.

As for the seven young baseball players: the one with the most severe injuries is currently at National Cheng Kung University Hospital, and was transferred from the ICU to a regular ward last week. Four other students have been discharged and are under care at home, and the last two are already back in school. Fortunately, everyone survived and those injured are gradually getting better.

Protection of Formosan landlocked salmon takes huge step forward

Have you ever heard of the Formosan landlocked salmon? It is an endangered fish endemic to mountain streams in Taiwan. Conservation efforts involve releasing its fry into the upper reaches of the remote Sqeran’ Creek to restore its population. This once used to involve an over six hour tough journey on foot through mountains and valleys. But now, thanks to the help of an airline company, which sponsored a helicopter to transport the fry, the journey now only takes 20 minutes.

Carefully hoisted by this helicopter is a container of fry from a fish that is considered to be a national treasure – the Formosan landlocked salmon. They will be released into the upper reaches of the Sqeran’ Creek.

This is the first time we’ve hooked up with a corporation that does ESG and made use of a corporation to sponsor this activity. It’s a very good way to contribute to the ecological restoration of the Formosan landlocked salmon.

The Shei-Pa National Park authorities have been working on conservation for 30 years. In the past, this kind of release had to be done by people carrying the fry in backpacks over mountains and rivers.

The arduous route on foot upstream and uphill, which could take more than six hours, often weakened the survival potential of the fry. However, helicopter transport takes only 20 minutes.

After a year of on-site exploration and two aerial surveys, we decided to work with an airline company to release the fry to that location by helicopter. This was the first such operation in Taiwan.

The Shei-Pa National Park authorities said that a total of 240 Formosan landlocked salmon fry approximately 16 centimeters long were successfully transported to the upper reaches of the Sqeran’Creek using this special helicopter. Releasing fry is only just one conservation measure. The real goal is to expand the fish’s habitat and gradually helped the Formosan landlocked salmon return to its historic haunts.

Food delivery apps display ‘minefields’ for parking tickets, slow elevators

Many people nowadays choose to stay at home and order food delivered right to their door. But in New Taipei’s Banqiao District, residents discovered that when they type in their address, the community is labeled as a “delivery minefield,” warning the driver to be careful. Police often patrol the area. One evening, a whole row of drivers was parked while delivering food, and they all got ticketed. Residents were annoyed, saying that next time they would tell the drivers to leave the food on the first floor. They don’t want their order to be rejected just because of where they live.

If you’re hungry, you can just take out your phone and open up a food delivery app. But when I enter my address and floor and go back to the main page, it labels my place as a “delivery minefield.”

The address was labeled as a “minefield,” with a later note saying that the elevator takes a long time, the police often issue tickets, and you might get towed. It left the residents annoyed.

It’s so annoying. We’ve run into these problems a lot, but we never thought that one day we’d be labeled like this. You might have to write in the notes to the delivery person that they can meet at the front door. It might be less convenient, but we really need delivery services.

This community in Banqiao was always overrun by parked delivery scooters when mealtime rolls around. But now, it’s getting harder to find a driver. How come they’re leaving money on the table? They have their reasons.

It’s not just the Taipei Sky Dome in Banqiao that’s been labeled. An addition was added after the name for the Neo Sky Dome near Xinpu Station saying it’s a delivery minefield. And all of Zhongyang Road in Xindian was also labeled.

If you’re ticketed, you almost always lose money. If I see an order is for this area, I won’t accept it.

I think it’s good to have these notices. If you’re delivering to an unfamiliar area, it shows you whether or not you may run into a problem, like you might get a ticket and it might cause trouble. Then you can choose not to accept the order.

Drivers make money by the order, so a ticket might make all their hard work go to waste. But for residents, seeing their community labeled as a “minefield” has damaged their user experience.

Famous stylist highlights HSR lunchbox, recommends over Taiwan Railway

When taking the train in Taiwan, it’s tradition to get a railway lunchbox. But which is your favorite: the classic Taiwan Railway bento, or the creative and refined HSR bento? Famous stylist Lee Ming-chuan recently got a meal on the HSR that he said subverted expectations and made him a convert.

Long lines of people are waiting even before the shop has opened. Whether they’re taking a train today or not, Taipei Main Station is a favorite destination for buying lunchboxes. Many people come for the classic Taiwan Railway porkchop. But recently, there’s another option that’s gained popularity.

One new fan of the HSR bento is Lee Ming-chuan, a famous stylist who often travels between northern and southern Taiwan. In a recent social media post, Lee said he changed his mind about the Taiwan Railway bento. He said that ever since the TR bento became like “stale coffee,” he’s lost interest in it. But he was surprised by the HSR lunchbox. Every part exceeded expectations, and the option to get two mains is a good deal. He said he might even betray Taiwan Railway.

Even this German blogger said he prefers the HSR lunchbox, and is amazed by its diverse offerings. Comparing the two, this classic Taiwan Railway bento has rice, a porkchop, non-GMO tofu skin, a braised egg, and seasonal vegetables for NT$100. On July 1, the HSR came out with two new meat and one new veggie option developed by a Kaohsiung airline caterer. One is a Chiayi chicken rice with pumpkin rice noodles, garnished with sakura shrimp. In addition to the two mains, it also comes with an egg, seasonal veggies, edamame, and tofu, all for NT$120. The low-fat and low-sodium option has also proven popular, while the HSR’s porkchop lunchbox competes head-to-head with Taiwan Railway.

For some, the Taiwan Railway lunchbox can’t be replaced, while others like the HSR’s new spin on a classic. By the numbers, the HSR prepares a little over 1,000 per day, while the Taiwan Railway makes 25,000. But both are excellent options, and inspire their own loyal fans.

Alfa Romeo re-enters Taiwanese market after 18 years

After 18 years, Italian carmaker Alfa Romeo has re-entered the Taiwanese market. On the day of the official launch, the brand’s classic models were all on display for car enthusiasts to experience up close. The brand’s most popular offerings also appeared to be on par with, if not better for value than those from other brands in a similar tier.

The iconic Italian carmaker Alfa Romeo is re-entering the Taiwanese market. One of its newest offerings is still modeled after a sports car with a long front and a short rear. It’s equipped with a 2.0 liter, 280 horsepower inline four cylinder turbo engine, as well as an intelligent Q4 four-wheel drive system.

The carbon fiber driveshaft can be lifted with a single arm, as it weighs only 7kg, which is 68% lighter than its conventional metal counterpart. This effectively reduces power loss and increases fuel efficiency.

Alfa Romeo’s twin-turbo engine was specially calibrated with Ferrari’s engineering, that’s why it’s also known as Ferrari’s more affordable alternative. After 18 years, it’s re-entering the Taiwanese market. The brand’s classic models over the years are also on display, giving car enthusiasts a chance to experience the century-old Italian car-making know-how.

There’s the Spider, an open-top two-seater roadster famously featured in the film “The Graduate,” as well as other famous Alfa Romeo models, in a display of the brand’s auto racing heritage. The size of the brand’s flagship model is around the same as the German Big Three’s, but it also comes with industry-leading 8-speed manumatic transmission and twin-scroll turbocharger, in a bid to entice potential buyers.

It roughly corresponds to the BMW M1 or Mercedes-AMG, taking the two German brands and Alfa Romeo’s top-tier Quadrifoglio models. As for compact models, they also come with a 2.0 liter inline four cylinder turbo engine with 280 horsepower, which is more powerful than other brands’ offerings in the same segment.

Alfa Romeo’s compact executive car model takes only 5.2 seconds to go from 0 to 100 kph. In contrast, the Audi A4, whether with a TDI turbodiesel engine or a TFSI turbo engine, takes 9.1 seconds to go from 0 to 100. As for the BMW 3 series, it comes with a 2.0 liter turbo engine and the 8-speed Steptronic transmission. Meanwhile, the Mercedez-Benz C-class comes with either a 1.5 liter or 2.0 liter turbo engine with a 48V mild hybrid system. Despite tepid market conditions in the first half of the year, luxury carmakers are still gearing up to offer customers solid products.
