Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association Chair Sumi Shuzo sits with Lai

2025-09-17

The Chair of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association Sumi Shuzo is in Taiwan for the first time since taking office. Since arriving in Taiwan, he’s met with President Lai Ching-te and Premier Cho Jung-tai. Sumi mentioned that a recent poll found more than 70% of Taiwanese people consider Japan their favorite country, showing the strength of bilateral exchanges. Meanwhile, Cho thanked Sumi for speaking up for stability in the Taiwan Strait in a recent meeting between the foreign ministers of Japan and China. Let’s hear more.

Lai Ching-te
President
I commend Chairman Sumi for taking to heart one of the teachings of Laozi from the Tao Te Ching, that “the highest good is like water.” I believe he will bring this spirit to his leadership of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association and help deepen the friendship between our two countries in many areas.

Sumi Shuzo
Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association Chair
About 76% of Taiwanese named Japan as their favorite country. The number of Taiwanese tourist visits to Japan has exceeded six million, reflecting our deep and solidly-based friendship.

Cho Jung-tai
Premier
TSMC’s plant in Kumamoto is an example of the strong foundation of Taiwan-Japan cooperation. These are ties that are not easily replicated by other countries. We hope to build on this foundation and take our bilateral relationship one step further, with cooperation in high tech. On July 10, Japanese Foreign minister Iwaya Takeshi brought up with his Chinese counterpart that large-scale military exercises near the Taiwan Strait ran contrary to the goal of maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Premier Cho presented Sumi with a box of Taiwanese fruits as a welcome gift. Over the years Taiwan and Japan have supported each other through natural disasters including typhoons and earthquakes. Now, amid complicated geopolitical shifts, the two countries are hoping for closer cooperation to strengthen Taiwan-Japan partnership.
